problem creating samba users
slackware 10.2
kernel 2.4.31 3.0.20 I cannot seem to create new samba users. I can create new users in Slack and can even login as them but when I try to create the user in samba I keep getting this: Failed to initialise SAM_ACCOUNT for user "username". Does this user exist in the UNIX password database ? I have tried with then command 'smbpasswd -a "username"' and by using SWAT and webmin and I get the same errors. I can use the username I created when I installed slack, but I didn't want windows users to have that one. This box is being used as a headless file server, so tools using X cannot be used unless I run VNC,which Iam trying to avoid. Paul |
smbpasswd is going to use accounts that actually exist in the Unix passwd file.

As I said, I can create users that can login to Slackware, but I cannot make those users Samba users. I just updated to Samba 3.0.20b with no difference in the problem. Since I cannot find this problem posted anywhere else on the Internet I guess I have a unique problem so I get to figure it out myself. What gets me is that the user-name I created during install works fine. As a work around I set that name to read only, gave it a simple password for the windows users and will upload to it from using nfs.
