Problem automounting cd and USB
I can not auto mount anything as a normal user, only as root. I get the
"Unable to mount "1G Removable Volume":" error. The cdrom line in fstab is commented out. I have added the user to the plugdev group. Here is the cdom(hdb) permissions: $ ls -l /dev/cdrom lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2009-01-15 12:46 /dev/cdrom -> hdb $ ls -l /dev/hdb brw-rw-rw- 1 root cdrom 3, 64 2009-01-15 12:46 /dev/hdb So, what else needs to be set up? First time using Slackware > 10.0. tj |
see man automount
is the daemon running? |
Maybe I wasn't clear and I shouldn't have called it auto mount. I guess it is more the HAL subsystem. Under Xfce I either insert a cd/dvd or plug in a USB thumb drive and it appears on the desktop, but if I try to access it as a normal user I get the cannot mount error. If I am logged in as root and click on the desktop icon it mounts and I can access it.
I hope this is more specific. tj |
Hi,
Do you have your user in the 'plugdev' group? I like to add the user(s) to the following groups; 'users floppy audio video cdrom plugdev'. |
Yes, the user is in plugdev and cdrom.

Problem solved
I found a post that had the same problem and after adding the user to the groups a complete REBOOT had to happen before the changes took effect. Rebooted and now cd/dvds and usb thumb drives can now be mounted by the user.
