The subtitle to what? A video? An audio file? What kind of subtitles are you expecting?

Do the subtitle have the exakt same filename but other file extension?
Have you tried loading it from the menu?
Do you use an font thats exists and is right for your language?
So what do you do when you try to get it working and what do you expect to happen?

Are you sure these programs support srt files?

EDIT: or mkv files with embedded subtitles? I've always played both with MPlayer.

I haven't tried it with xine, but most video players require the avi and srt files to have the same names (except for the extensions, of course). Up.avi and up.srt don't have same names. However, Up.avi and Up.srt both would. So would up.avi and up.srt. This is definitely the case with MPlayer, which is what I use.

I'm surprised to hear that. None of the file management programs I'm familiar with have this problem. What program are you using to rename the files, and how are you using it?

I'm using Xine 0.99.5 with Slackware 12.1 and subtitles always work perfectly.

You don't actually have to 'open' the subtitle file, Xine finds it automatically if both files are in the same directory and are named properly:

My Movie.avi
My Movie.srt

Then in Xine, under subtitle > channel:

set to 'auto' or '0'

Mine is set to 'auto' so subtitles play by default if they exist.

The only way I can think that a file "disappears" into another is if that "file" is actually a "directory" ....

This is not true. Most video players will default to playing subtitles with the same basename, yet you can always specify a separate file directly (as the OP seemed to have done in post 6). For example,
Code:
mplayer foo.avi -sub bar.srt
I have, however, seen instances where srt files have dos line endings which don’t work in mplayer. You have to run it through dos2unix before using them:
Code:
dos2unix bar.srt
