Question printer (HP LJ2P Plus) - in SW 9.0

I've never installed/configured printing before, (so bear with me).
I'm trying to set up my LaserJet IIP Plus up. (local printer, /dev/lp0; but eventually to be shared). My first thought was via apsfilter. I hoped that all the files I'd need would have already been installed by my original CD install of "install all" from the CD set. I was heartened - as the script seemed to have all the desired choices available. But at the end, it wanted access to libomni.so I looked around a little and couldn't find it on any of the 4CDs (from SW). I looked around on the net - found the project -- downloaded the latest (Omni-0.9.0.tar.gz) - opened it up , hoping for a prebuilt library (I'm lazy - it happens). Not there; - oh well - looked at the build instructions - "Please do not use the 3.X version of gcc. The released versions will not compile omni. "

SW 9.0 uses gcc 3.2.2

Assuming that apsfilter is the way to go, any ideas ?

Or, did I overlook something on one of the 4CDs ?

Or, should I take some other tack ?

Thanks in advance for any response

Thats wierd, I setup my printer with apsfilter just fine and it never asked me to put in any CD. I did a full install and my printer is a LaserJet5L hooked up to the parallel port. I have heard that CUPS is another program/method to set printers up, but I have never used it. I think it comes with Slack, not sure though. Look through your email, there should be one from Patrick V. that explains a little about APSFilter and CUPS.

Well, I think the deal is that my printer is so old that apsfilter wants that particular library for it (my local CompUSA no longer stocks toner for it, but I belong to the "thrifty" school); (that's the libary my answers to SETUP pointed me to, so I asked for it). I've thought of trying some other libraries to see how well, they do - I think I just need something that produces PCL4; and also trying CUPS - which is on CD2 under /extra (and thanks for pointing out the Patrick V. email - from the install, which I'd skimmed, but not in detail, especially as it gives me a hint about my CD/RW; which is also on my "get it working" list).
