Printer does not work - Slack 10

I use a usb HP 5150.
CUPS.
I installed it through Mozilla - /localhost:631/, and through the KDE Printing manager. It sees the printer (5150 in usb) shows that is installed but it does not print. Not even the test page. No responce at all. When I press the test or print button gives me the answer "Test page successfully sent to printer hp." But nothing happens.
I went to /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and I activated the USB Printer support (/sbin/modprobe printer)
nothing again. I was using the printer in Slacware 9.1 with no problem.
I would be grateful to any one that can help.

Suggest you try a different driver. I had the same problem when using the recommended driver (Gimprint).
Gimprint + Foomatic worked.

Dear friend,

first of all I appreciate the help.
I have tried various things. Drivers.
I removed both, LPRNG and CUPS and I reinstalled CUPS several times.
No help.

You see guys I was using this printer fine under Slack 9.1.
I never expected a problem like that.

OK! You've reinstalled CUPS several times. Have you tried downloading and installing the version of CUPS from Slackware 9.1, this being the one which worked? It should still be obtainable from the Slackware website. It's worth a try.

I have an hp5650 usb printer.
Installing with http://localhost:631 it would print a test page but nothing else.
Installed it again using the kde control panel, changing print system from whatever to cups
It works perfectly now.

I downloaded nothing this time.

WilliamS,

That I have tried long ago. Nothing different.
Since you almost have the same printer could you tell me:
did you removed lprng?
did you reinstalled cups?
did you enabled usb printers from rc.modules?
there was a need for all this?

I selected cups and made sure lprng was not selected during setup/installation, to avoid having to start cups from cli.

No, I did not re-install cups, nor enable printer in rc.modules, didn't need to do this.

I wonder if your system finds the right driver (hpijs for me)?

I think the only reason mine wouldn't print was that the wrong printing system was selected, showed in control centre.

I find the HP 5L foomatic driver works just fine for most every printer. Give it a go.
Worth deleting all your previous printers and just setting up the new one with the CUPS server browser/GUI. Then just select CUPS on 127.0.0.1 as your CUPS server on KDE and ur away.

Dear otchie1 and WilliamS,

Sorry for the delay but I was away.
I have tried different drivers, different ways of installing and reinstalling CUPS, different versions of CUPS,
nothing.
Somewhere else should be the problem.

No clue to me, but I'm not used to this type error message.

How about trying this?
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...light=Printing

It always worked for me when I used 9.1

I know they are a bit obvious buthave you checked the basics?

Paper in printer?
No warning light on printer?
USB cable connected at both ends?
Printer turned on?

All very silly I know but easily overlooked.

My experience with CUPS is that it is essentailly bullet-proof.

Use only the CUPS browser to setup and administer your printerserver on 127.0.0.1. Once that is up and reporting that the printer is 'accepting jobs' then progress to the KDE stuff.

Try using the 'raw' driver...it'll print rubbish but at least you'll know that it's just a question of finding the right ppd file.

Please post which kernel you are using so we can try a different approach.

Also from your error log :-

Have you tried this? If so, please post the results

I just found the following on Evan McNabb's Homepage. I don't know if it will help. You may have tried all of this but I'll post it anyway:-

Dec 12, 2003

I tried to get my Brother HL 1440 working using CUPS and USB today. Got some strange errors such as "Media tray empty!" and the following in /var/log/cups/error_log:

I [12/Dec/2003:19:53:26 -0700] Saving printers.conf...
I [12/Dec/2003:19:53:26 -0700] Printer 'hl1440-usb' started by 'root'.
I [12/Dec/2003:19:53:26 -0700] Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops (PID 10909) for job 101.
E [12/Dec/2003:19:53:26 -0700] PID 10910 stopped with status 22!
I [12/Dec/2003:19:53:26 -0700] Hint: Try setting the LogLevel to "debug" to find out more.
I [12/Dec/2003:19:53:26 -0700] Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip (PID -10910) for job 101.
I [12/Dec/2003:19:53:26 -0700] Started backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb (PID 10911) for job 101.
W [12/Dec/2003:19:53:26 -0700] [Job 101] Media tray empty!
I [12/Dec/2003:19:53:26 -0700] Saving printers.conf...

Nothing would print.
Solution:

I needed to emerge (install) foomatic. This installed the foomatic-filters-3.0.0, foomatic-db-engine-3.0.0, foomatic-db-20030716, foomatic-3.0.0. I restarted cups and everything worked fine.

Mikie
