Question Power Button under linux

Under Windows on my pc when the power button is pressed the computer automatically shuts down instead of cutting off the power. The button has to be pressed for a few seconds for the power to be cut off. How can I get Linux to do this? Is there any way to improve what Windows does (i.e. instead of automatically shuting down when the button is pressed asking whether to shutdown or not)? I have Slackware 9.

Why are you shutting down with the power button? This is a really dirty way to do things!

If you are at the command line, then 'shutdown -h now'

otherwise from kde etc, log out, then shutdown from the menu.

if that doesn't work, check that you have acpi installed

of course, theres always ctrl-alt-del!

Always get the latest stable kernel from www.kernel.org. That would be 2.4.21. APM is supported in the kernel, just select it using menuconfig.

If you put to put linux to sleep try "apm -s" or read "man apm".

I have the kernel sources for 2.4.20, but I have been having problems trying to compile it. How can I find out if the kernel I'm using now supports apm?

sorry I meant apm not acpi.
the kernel has supported apm for ages, so you dont need a new one for this purpose.
support for apm is found under PCI Hotplug Support .
In your config file you would want to see
CONFIG_APM=m
the original config file is in /boot, but if you recompiled, it is saved by default in /usr/src/linux

the important bit!!!
uncomment the APM line in your etc/rc.d/rc.modules file:

#### APM support ###
# APM is a BIOS specification for saving power using several different
# techniques. This is mostly useful for battery powered laptops.
/sbin/modprobe apm

dont worry about the laptop reference.

I recompiled the kernel and the power button started working like I wanted it to. However, whenever I try to run apm it tells me that there's no apm support in the kernel. I thougt I included support for it in the kernel. I'll probably have to recompile it again.

Does apm have to be compiled as a module?

I think slackware expects apm to be compiled as a module, yes.
that is what I have anyway.

try typing lsmod in a console.
you should see apm listed there.

you can read the various make xconfig help comments easily by looking at the file /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Configure.help

by the way, if its working now, why recompile?

I have apm compiled as part of the kernel. There are some other things concerning apm under CONFIG_APM. Which ones do I choose? By the way, since apm is claiming that there is no apm support inthe kernel, the power button probably started working because of enabling acpi.

Cribbed from Configure.help:
Power Management support
CONFIG_PM
"Power Management" means that parts of your computer are shut
off or put into a power conserving "sleep" mode if they are not
being used. There are two competing standards for doing this: APM
and ACPI. If you want to use either one, say Y here and then also
to the requisite support below.

also: (re ACPI)

This support requires an ACPI compliant platform (hardware/firmware).
If both ACPI and Advanced Power Management (APM) support are
configured, whichever is loaded first shall be used.

I guess you could boot into your bios, and check the options there, it will almost certainly give some indication of what power management is available.

my apm section looks like this:

# PCI Hotplug Support
#
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI=m
# CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_COMPAQ is not set
# CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_IBM is not set
CONFIG_SYSVIPC=y
CONFIG_BSD_PROCESS_ACCT=y
CONFIG_SYSCTL=y
CONFIG_KCORE_ELF=y
# CONFIG_KCORE_AOUT is not set
CONFIG_BINFMT_AOUT=m
CONFIG_BINFMT_ELF=y
CONFIG_BINFMT_MISC=m
CONFIG_PM=y
# CONFIG_ACPI is not set
CONFIG_APM=m
# CONFIG_APM_IGNORE_USER_SUSPEND is not set
# CONFIG_APM_DO_ENABLE is not set
# CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE is not set
# CONFIG_APM_DISPLAY_BLANK is not set
CONFIG_APM_RTC_IS_GMT=y
# CONFIG_APM_ALLOW_INTS is not set
# CONFIG_APM_REAL_MODE_POWER_OFF is not set

but chances are that you have completely different hardware to me.
(my mobo is an asus p4b266se)

so if acpi works for you stick with it!

regards
tobyl

So if my bios uses acpi, I probably can't use "apm -s" to sleep. How should I do it then?
