Power button or unplug cable

Hello,
I am running slackware 12.2 on a box and the other day some programs didn't start. So I reset the box by pushing in the power button. Some things still didn't start up. I disconnected the power cable and waited 10 seconds. After that everything booted up fine. Why wouldn't just holding the power button reset everything?
thanks,
vadder

It might be power management (apm, acpi). Normally the reset button WILL reset the box under linux, and the power button will power off. Check to see if either or both apm and acpi are loaded up by an lsmod command. At least this is what my guess is.

Check to see how the power button is configured in the BIOS. Fairly common is a 4 second wait period to determine how the BIOS responds to pressing the button.
