Possible to switch between console boot + Mandriva Speedboot-like boot at LILO?

With the new xorg and kernel in Slackware-current, I wanted to know if it is possible to set up two entries in LILO;

-one in which Slackware boots to the console, you see all the kernel messages and end up at the login prompt,
-another in which Slackware boots like modern distributions with KDM/GDM?

I remember when Mandriva (I think it was Mandriva) linux had introduced it's speedboot setup, in which it would load KDM/GDM (the log-in screen) as soon as it can, and then the desktop, while the rest of the system boots. I just remember seeing an article on Mandriva's speedboot a couple months ago, so I might be a little outdated on my knowledge of this boot technique.

I apologize for seeming to want to modernize slackware, I tried switching to Mandriva, but I was so used to Slacking that I found it hard to switch.

Thanks for any info.

Just add 'init 4' to an extra entry to have it boot to GUI login. But this is not the same as speed-boot. That depends on many changes to the kernel, applications and init routines to make boot-times lower.

Perhaps the following will help:

Configuring Slackware for a GUI and a Command Line Startup

GRUB oriented but the concept applies to Lilo.

I've not tried this but initng will start your init scripts in parallel.

I got this to work by copying a stanza from /etc/lilo.conf that already worked - then adding this to the original stanza for cli mode booting:
Code:
append="init=3"
and this to the copied one for runlevel 4 (gui) boots:
Code:
append="init=4"
works a charm.
