Please help me - all i get is text


yo im a noob to linux so i dont know how its supposed to look but all i get is like windows DOS. no shell or anything. i just installed slackware and all i get it root@Haxor:~#
all i can do is type.. how do i fix this?

the same thing happens with RedHat.

startx

If you installed a desktop environment like KDE, Fluxbox, or GNOME.

OR edit the /etc/inittab file and change the line

id:3:initdefault:

to

id:5:initdefault:

to get a permanent graphical environment..

how do i get the dual boot now that im in linux. i can set it up in the Boot Manager (LILO) control thingy

There is an option in the linux |Control Center|
under |System Andministration|
|Boot Manager (lilo)|

what options do i need to configure there to dual boot with my Windows XP on HDA1 or c:/

hmmm. On my slack 9.1, it says init level 5 is not used, but by default is the same as runlevel 3.

I think you want runlevel 4?

To answer your lilo question, I believe the easiest(for me) way to install lilo would be to open up a terminal, switch to root, type pkgtool, go to setup, and run the lilo install script. Just tell it to add the windows partition and save the configuration.

or you can open up a terminal (as root)
type

emacs /etc/lilo.conf

add these lines right at the bottom

other=/dev/hda1
label=windoze

press ctrl-x ctrl-s to save.

at the console type
lilo to install your new settings.

a remote desktop administration would work best here

also i cant red from my cd-roms or floppy drives. or play music from CD.
