pidgin hung on connecting

hello.i reinstalled slackware 12.2 on my laptop.after my usual post-install procedures(slackpkg update, slackpkg ugrade-all), i setup pidgin as my im.the problem is that pidgin always stays on connecting but never connects.i test the pidgin on my desktop(which also has slackware 12.2) and it also stays only in connecting.the pidgin on my desktop used to worked. i don't know if it has something to do with updating the pidgin with the slackware-security.how can i fix it so i can use pidgin again?
thanks in advance

What version of pidgin are you using ? yahoo has changed their server protocols so older versions of pidgin will not work with yahoo. You must install a newer version, and you will probably have to compile it yourself.

Yahoo is not logging in properly with Kopete either. Yahoo seem to constantly change their protocol to screw around vendor-neutral instant messengers.

If pidgin is hanging on yahoo, and you have not updated pidgin you can fix it by going in to the settings for yahoo and updating the pager server by adding a cn. to it. scs.msg.yahoo.com would become cn.scs.msg.yahoo.com. Or you can update pidgin by editing the slackbuild for it and building a package for a newer version of pidgin.

thanks for the quick reply, guys.

@H_TeXMeX_H: im using pidgin 2.5.6. is compiling the only solution or is there something else i can do to fix it before going to that route?.

@harishankar: Kopete is working fine in my system. that's what im using right now.

Hi,

I fixed the server setting and it's working now. By the way, does cn mean China? Can I use a different server or is it a yahoo specific setting.

You could change the server as XGizzmo says, but that fix may not last long. Best think to do is update to a newer version. Compiling it is usually not that difficult, you can use the slackbuild if you like.

I had to update to version 2.5.7 and now yahoo works with no problems. I used the slackbuild provided in the source directory.

2.5.8 has been released for some time, which should get you better handling for Yahoo protocols
