Painless update from 11 to current?
 

Hello
Is there a way to update my Slackware 11 to something like current or 12?
I don't want a new X or HAL, but base libraries like GTK+2.
Currently it is impossible to complie GTK+2 (newer versions) or other recent things from source becouse there are always compiler errors. So I prefer updating through packages if possible. I know every new version of everything is linked against newer libraries and maybe there is a 'proper order' in installing stuff...

There was one nice thread about updating Slackware around, but I can't find it.

Can it be done without upgrading X?

You need to read and follow this if you want to do this well:

You won't be able to upgrade directly to current and running current is probably not a good idea at this moment since the glibc has just been upgraded and many things will be broken for a while.

Also, you probably will have to do a full upgrade since Slack-12 is using the modular X. I would expect you'd have problems with some X-dependent programs otherwise. Slack-12 is kind of a 'watershed' release where you need to either go the whole way or none at all.

It seems that CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT and UPGRADE.TXT are the same?
Anyway it seems I will be updating only to Slack 12, as you have said.

I never use current myself, but most of the time it's pretty okay if you know what you are doing. But if you look at the ChangeLog for current and search for glibc-2.7 you'll see why I say that right now is probably not a good time to go that way. I usually don't upgrade until Slackware-??.1 version comes out -and then I do it grudgingly. I find updating a waste of time for my purposes, but since I author software for Slackware I have to have at least a minimal system of the latest stable release to make sure I stay compatible. With my hardware and personal needs I could still happily run Slackware-8.1!
