Otter Browser (Opera 12 clone)

Some guys are developing a browser that - according to their plans - will get the look and feel of Opera 12 in the future, but with the WebKit engine.

That sounds like a good idea - I always liked Opera and as Firefox is slowly becoming a bloated mess it would be a good alternative.

Has anyone already tried building this thing on Slackware?

The source code is here: https://github.com/Emdek/otter

+1. Like the idea!

Interesting project, but they have a long way to go to catch up with Opera 12. The current version 0.9 called Beta ("Beta" used to mean feature complete) currently is not much more than a QtWebKit demo mockup.

My main worry is: In three to five years, when they have a usable browser with basic features (like plugin click to play, F12 menu, spatial keyboard navigation etc.) ready, I might already be comfortable with Chrome 101 and Opera will just be a dim memory from the past I once paid money for...

Opera is also switching to webkit, if they haven't already.

No, they are using Chromium now, that is Blink. Opera being a Chrome with a different icon was the sole reason for starting this project...

Discussed here, http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...el-4175456599/

I decided to resurrect the thread just to mention the Otter-browser, just found it in the slackbuilds and am very impressed with it. Launches fast, picks up a gtk+ look, acts as classic opera, doesn't force me to change my browsing habits.

I've been using seamonkey suite for years now, having previously used Opera with integrated Mail. Otter might become the Other Main Browser in my system, i hope.

It requires qt5 (5.6.0 or newer) installed.

I used this for a bit [as in minutes] and then reverted to Vivaldi. It just felt too outdated and clunky to me.

For nostalgics, there's of course an O12 skin for Vivaldi out there: https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/214318

When I took my Windows 7 netbook out of the cupboard in 2017 - which had sat in there unused since 2011 - I fired it up and noticed that the version of Opera on it was 11. I tried browsing the internet with it but it was pretty hard, a lot of sites just didn't work. It was nice to see it there, though the whole OS then got flattened by Lubuntu.

cwizardone 11-27-2019 06:42 AM

Until just the other day I always installed Opera-12.16 and used it from time to time, but it is now at the point it can no longer connect to many, if not most, web sites.
Guess, I could use it just for linuxquestions.org.
:)
I like what Vivaldi is doing, but, one, it is based on chromium (google does evil), and, two, I just don't trust it. I don't care what "they" say, it remembers your browsing history, even after you have supposedly cleared it, closed the browser and restarted it.

I tried Otter-Browser and found right away the Chromium "Blink" engine powering it.

Only Chrome/Chromium or FF powered browsers are left now. We have been painted into a corner
