OSS issue: Sound problems in Linux-native games

I asked this a while ago while i was still running Redhat 9 and I was completely ignored. I'm now running Slackware 9.1 with a freshly compiled 2.6.0 kernel (it runs great ). I've dumped ALSA in favor of OSS (it just sounds better on my system in XMMS). Still, I'm having the same issue with this as I had with a stock RH9 system. The sound skips and pops in Linux native games. No problems with XMMS or Xine, no problem with Half-Life running under Wine. I'm at a loss as to what's causing this. The sound chip is onboard VIA AC97.

After searching 8 pages that mentioned ALSA and no sound, I gave up. My problem is not no sound. My problem is sound skipping and popping in Linux-native games.
