Optimal root partition size

How much space should I reserve for the root partition (excluding /home)?

my root partition is just 500 megs, but /usr is almost 6 gigs,

anyuser@gnu:~$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1 464M 265M 176M 61% /
/dev/hda2 5.9G 2.1G 3.5G 38% /usr

home is on a separate disk (/dev/hdb)

For a default CD install from most distros, I say 3gigs.
If you think you would like to install a lot of programs, probably 7Gigs.
(That does not count your personal /home files)

If you exclude /opt (if using kde) and /usr and /home, you only need 80-100MB for the rest. Of course /tmp and /var can fill up quickly that way. I don't really expect you to do it that way, but hope that helps you understanf where the 'fat' is. /usr/bin usually turns out to be the largest folder.

I use this for years now. Never even got over than 3Gigs. (for the whole root, no separate /var, /usr... directories)
