Opera Mail for slackware?

Does anybody have a url to a packae or even a slackbuild for Opera Mail I want to try it out cheers

Opera mail was a part of the Opera browser, at least through v. 12.x. On my Opera v. 26 for Windows, the mail capability, along with several other features I've come to depend on, seem to have disappeared. It has been my primary email client for years. If you want to get a feel for it, just use the mail feature in the most recent release for Linux.

Opera mail as a separate, stand-alone application, seems so far to be for Windows only. I have not used it, but I might test it on my Windows box when I get a chance. If I do, I shall report back. Based on the screenshots, it looks like the interface that was integrated in the browser.

The Opera web mail service, which allowed you to obtain an Opera email address, was ended some time ago.

Frankly, as far as I can tell, the current Opera management has decided that the best way to achieve their goals, whatever they are, is to gut their product.

Opera's management has never been particularly "brilliant." Given all the innovations (features) they introduced over the years they should have been the most popular browser, but they, Opera management, couldn't figure out how to market their "product."
Opera committed corporate suicide just about two years ago and now isn't much more than a google subsidiary.

Here is a seven year old article that says it all,

The Opera mail for Windows looks a lot like the browser mail client, just ripped out of the browser. It seems to have many of the same features. For example, it has an RRS reader (not yet tested), but doesn't seem to have message "filters."

I'll use it for a while and report back.

Over the last couple of years I've settled on SeaMonkey to replace Opera. SeaMonkey has a far better mail client.

frankbell 12-12-2014 08:26 PM

I might have to look at Seamonkey again. The last time I fiddled with it, several years ago mind you, I found it rather clunky.

Update:

Seamonkey has come a long way.

Agreed. The Seamonkey mail client is brilliant. My default mail program is claws-mail; it is light and fast with a good amount of features.

I have been using thunderbird for quite some time thought I would try something new. As far as Windows is whats that I don't have any machine that runs windows however I would be curious to hear the results of the standalone windows client to see if ever they release a standalone Linux mail client if it would be worth my time.

Thank you for all the reply's people I wasn't sure if they did release a Linux version though testing Opera web browser was rather disappointing as I found Chrome loaded facebook much faster and a few other pages so I think I will stick to Chrome for web browsing personally.

I will be using the Opera for Windows mail client on my Windows machine.

I was using Sylpheed, but it broke. I didn't have time to troubleshoot it so I loaded up Thunderbird, but, for some reason, the Thunderbird interface has always annoyed me (that's not a criticism, it's just a matter of taste). I think I'll stick with the Opera client for a while and see how it goes (it's not my primary computer, so it's good for experimentation).

caveman86 12-13-2014 09:48 PM

The one thing it seems between us all self proclaimed computer nerds is we love to experiment and that was what I was going to do if I found a Linux only version of Opera mail client was experiment to see if I liked it better if there is one problem that Thunderbird is driving me around the twist with is trying to change its default web browser. Everytime I click on a link in my email bam it opens firefox and I don't want it to open firefox I want it to open Chrome does anyone here have a solution or I will have to keep hacking away at it till I work it out.

I do so hate the programs that think that nagging you is the way to win friends and influence people.

You might want to look at Claws/Sylpheed. There's a Slackbuild.

It's not affiliated with any browsers and won't nag you. Note that it does not do HTML mail, but, if you install the plugins, there is a nice viewer for looking at HTML mail. I quite like it, but I've used Opera mail for so long . . . .

Then again there's always Mutt, if you want to go full-bore command line.

caveman86 12-13-2014 10:43 PM

I might have a look into it I been using thunderbird for years but it forcing me to use mozilla firefox to view my html links is driving me batty I like to use chrome because I find it fast and works well with my system firefox I find to be slow and sluggish bulky etc I will tell you going through all the settings and config files to try and find where one setting is to see what the url handler is, is a damm nightmare so maybe trying out claws/sylpheed might be the option..... What is the plugin for the viewer and how do you install them whats involved before I do go any further

caveman86 12-13-2014 10:45 PM

What is its spam filter like or plugin?

frankbell 12-14-2014 08:15 PM

Plugin, Bogofilter or Spamassassin. I used Bogofilter and Fancy (that's the HTML mail viewer).

You can find the Claws plugins here: http://www.claws-mail.org/plugins.php
