I'm not sure what pps files are. OO presentations are odp files, powerpoint are ppt. Are pps the OO 2.x format? If so, I'm sorry I can't help because I'm using 3.x.

Actually, .pps is the standard suffix for PowerPoint Slideshows and they played perfectly in OpenOffice 2.4, in Kubuntu and in OpenOffice 3.0, in XP. All of the 26 ms-powerpoint slideshows in my collection are labeled .pps.
The .ppt suffix represents PowerPoint Presentatiions.and they played just as well as the others in Kubuntu.

OK. Found the problem.
The number of audio formats that the OpenOffice media player, actually JMF, can play is so limited that unless the media file attached to the slide show is in one of those few formats, it you won't get a sound. Simple as that.
There is a way to expand the number of formats JMF can play, per the document bgeddy was kind enough to provide a link to, but after over two hours of trying to download and compile the file, forget it. More trouble than it is worth. I have XP running in VIrtualBox and will just play the pps files through, ugh, ms-powerpoint.
It is moments like this that make me think of giving up and bowing to the "evil empire" in Redmond, but I get over it.

BTW, have you read about "XP Mode" for windows 7? Seems mickeysoft can't even get that done correctly.

Go-oo

Someone finally responded to the message I left on the OpenOffice forum
regarding this matter and they suggested I try Go-OO (http://www.go-oo.org), which is based on OpenOffice, but uses gstreamer.
Does anyone have any experience with this version of OO?
Many Thanks.

JMF in Slackware 13.0

To install JMF in Slackware I used slackbuild:

Open the site http://slackbuilds.org/ type "jmf" download jmf.tar.gz and jmf-2_1_1e-linux-i586.bin (using the link shown at the site), exctract jmf.tar.gz, put jmf-2_1_1e-linux-i586.bin in the extracted folder and run the slackbuid script.
Install the generated package (# installpkg /tmp/jmf-2.1.1e-i586-1_SBo.tgz)
It worked.
(I installed it at Slackware 12.2, to install in Slackware 13.0 use
# installpkg /tmp/jmf-2.1.1e-i586-1_SBo.txz).
