i downloaded every 1.1rc release from rc to rc3 openoffice.org.

then i tar xvfz OOblah.......rc.tar.gz
everything extracts into folder "OOblah........rc" normally

then i cd to "OOblah........rc" make myself root

bash-2.05b# ./install
Installation starting, please be patient ...
glibc version: 2.3.2

Initializing installation program....................

Installation Completed
and nothing else happens!!!

bash-2.05b# ./setup
glibc version: 2.3.2
bash-2.05b#
in this scenario i get a small progress bar for about 30 seconds.... then nothing else happens.

The way it says in the docs and the way I did done do it:

./install --prefix=/usr/local (or whatever directory you want accessible to all users)

cd to that directory whether as root or a normal user to set it up

./setup

and that's you, it'll create a directory in your home directory

cd to it and

./soffice

to start up

each user can run the ./setup to install and copy the needed files

No idea then

You've probably looked here but all I can do is point you to the installation page which applies to 1.1rc2 onward, so it says, and is basically as above

Are you in an X environment when you install? One of the wierd aspects of the OO install is that it is graphical. If you pop open a terminal in your X environment and install from their, you may have better luck.

ok here's my update on the situation.
i've just downloaded rc4 and now the installation from the command "./install --prefix=/opt" works perfectly. But when i go and run "./setup" as a user i get an error message that reads "Segmentation fault"

any ideas???

P.S. thanks to everyone for all the help so far it really has gotten me farther than i was before.
