openning ports

I need to open some ports and i'm having some trouble.
i typed
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 3630:3640 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 3630:3640 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -s 0/0 -j DROP

all this did was boot me from ssh and it still didn't open the ports.

Starting nmap 3.70 ( http://www.insecure.org/nmap/ ) at 2005-01-16 14:07 EST
Interesting ports on 10.0.0.4:
(The 1651 ports scanned but not shown below are in state: closed)
PORT STATE SERVICE
21/tcp open ftp
22/tcp open ssh
37/tcp open time
80/tcp open http
111/tcp open rpcbind
113/tcp open auth
139/tcp open netbios-ssn
445/tcp open microsoft-ds
631/tcp open ipp

here's my nmap after i ran those commands. I will add them to my firewall config once I get it working. Any ideas, i really need these ports open.

Do you actually have a process listening on those ports?

Cheers,

3632/tcp open distccd

I set up a proccess on 3632 but it only appears when i run nmap on the machine itself. When i run it from another machine on the network it doesn't show that 3632 is open.

When traversing the tables the order is significant...
Do an iptables -L and check the order of your rules.

It also makes a difference whether you only allow
established connections or not ...
