OpenGL rendering issue since slackware -current update

I updated to -current last week and had problems with the graphics driver not being recognised. I downloaded and re-installed the nvidia drivers however opengl rendering now seems very slow in fullscreen.
I've tried re-installing mesa and then freeglut slackbuild but no luck.

Code:

$ glxgears
2736 frames in 5.0 seconds = 547.134 FPS
2893 frames in 5.0 seconds = 578.560 FPS
2900 frames in 5.0 seconds = 579.938 FPS
1367 frames in 5.0 seconds = 273.198 FPS
298 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.556 FPS
269 frames in 5.0 seconds = 53.653 FPS
274 frames in 5.0 seconds = 54.711 FPS

The above is running glxgears and then maximizing the window during the 4th iteration.

The pc seems to report that I am using 3d acceleration though:

Code:

$ glxinfo |  grep ren
direct rendering: Yes
.
.
.
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer

Anyone know what might be going on here?? Could it be something to do with that last line? Any ideas on how to fix that?

Press the Report button, and ask for this to be moved to the Slackware forum.

Actually, glxinfo clearly shows that 3D acceleration is not being used. The software rasterizer is, after all, running in software :-)

Show us your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

I have re-installed the nvidia driver, but now it's even worse! Applications will not run at all, not even glxinfo :(:

Code:

$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

Your Xorg log file looks good to me. If I had to guess, I'd say that you are linking against the mesa version of libGL, rather than the nvidia version.

Did you use one of the builds on SBo to install the driver? http://slackbuilds.org/result/?search=nvidia&sv=13.1

I first used the one from the nvidia site then I tried the slackbuild ones but that caused x not to want to start at all!! So I ended up having to re-install the one from the nvidia site.

It all used to work fine pre-current update. :(

The driver version available from Slackbuilds.org does not work with -current; you have to use the latest vesion from the Nvidia website.

I am doing - that is what is causing the following error:

Code:

$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

adamk75 11-27-2010 02:30 PM

What's the output of 'ldd /usr/bin/glxinfo | grep libGL' ?

Adam

devnull10 11-27-2010 06:52 PM

Code:

$ ldd /usr/bin/glxinfo | grep libGL
        libGLEW.so.1.5 => /usr/lib/libGLEW.so.1.5 (0xb77cb000)
        libGLU.so.1 => /usr/local/lib/libGLU.so.1 (0xb775e000)
        libGL.so.1 => /usr/local/lib/libGL.so.1 (0xb7705000)

Well I'm out of ideas. I'm not sure why you're linking against an OpenGL library in /usr/local/lib/, nor do I know whether that's even correct for nvidia on Slackware. Someone more familiar with the nvidia drivers will have to chime in here.

On my system with a working nVidia 7300 LE using the 260.19.12 proprietary driver I see this:
Quote:

bash-4.1$ ldd /usr/bin/glxinfo | grep libGL
libGLEW.so.1.5 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libGLEW.so.1.5 (0xb77b1000)

I suggest that you uninstall the nVidia driver and freeglut , reinstall the mesa and glew packages, then reinstall the nVidia driver.

wildwizard 11-27-2010 07:45 PM

Well what ever put stuff in /usr/local is your problem that should be empty as nvidia won't put itself in there.

Remove whatever weird packages have infected your /usr/local tree and then reinstall the nvidia blob and you should be able to start X.
