openchrome and xorg

I upgraded to 13.0 slackware. Xorg compiles. Openchrome compiles. no errors. BUT I cannot find the openchrome executable/*.so in addition I cant figure out how to modify Xorg.conf the default is no help at all and I dont really understand the process. it is new to me. so help please. :(

janhe 11-28-2009 01:46 PM

The xorg config file isn't needed that much anymore.
Try to run "startx" whithout a xorg.conf

then post the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log

it really looks like it is trying to open my OLD ati driver (not present anymore)

and I really have NO IDEA how to fix this or even attack the problem.

MartinS 11-29-2009 03:36 PM

It looks like X is trying to load the ati driver. Be aware that I'm not a Slackware user. You could try to uninstall the xf86-video-ati package (or whatever it is called in Slackware).
Another possibility would be to create a new xorg.conf. From a shell type the the following commands as a root user:
Code:

# X -configure
# mv xorg.config.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Edit the newly created xorg.conf and make sure that you use "openchrome" as driver in the "device" section.
I suggest that you comment out
Code:

#InputDevice    "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
#InputDevice    "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"

in the "ServerLayout" section. Make sure that you have loaded the driver "evdev":
Code:

# modprobe evdev
Hope this helps with your problem.

dogbird 11-29-2009 09:14 PM

the basic problem is evdev I think this the video driver for openchrome. but that is just my guess
It is not loaded and I dont know how to dothat. I get the same stuff as before but now it wants somethine else and I dont know how to create that.

The Error is
ERROR ON LINE 71 in section DEVICE in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
there is must be an identifier line

MartinS 11-30-2009 02:00 AM

Hello,
evdev is the driver for your keyboard and mouse. On my system the package containing the driver is called xf86-input-evdev. But you can also use the "kbd" and "mouse" driver, just uncomment the lines I mentioned before:
Code:

InputDevice    "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice    "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"

For your problem with your "xorg.conf" I would guess, that you perhaps forgot some quotation marks. Can you post the section where it complains?

Why do you try to compile the driver yourself, isn't there a package for Slackware? Can you describe the steps you do for compiling the driver?

I read over that the first time.

Why do you compile Xorg yourself? Have you tried using the slackware stock Xorg?

Using the stock Xorg, you should be able to startx without a Xorg.conf Most of the things are configured automatically.

Then you can add the lines that are needed. My Xorg.conf is 8 lines. 4 lines for setting the resolution when using a external CRT, 4 for using nvidia driver, the rest is autoconfig.

Please try this with the stock Xorg, otherwise I cannot guess what causes the troubles.

dogbird 11-30-2009 04:16 PM

ok I compiled Xorg because the system I had had an obsolete version. :( it was non compus mentis. I compiled the driver because I was trying to get the latest driver available. I know that slack 13.0 had Xorg. all I was doing was trying to find the peices.

I need to configure my system. black box we do everything for you is my problem. I wanted to know how to do it. what was the current idea behind it. and the error I got was

just what you see. NO OTHER INFORMATION is available. look at the large printout. and tell me how to recover and fix it. I only wanted to know how it worked. and what the VIA freechrome drive was and where was it stored. then how do I configure it so I can bring up X windows. the old tools are not used anymore and I cant figure out how the system is supposed to work. Running a startx with default Xorg is not information. I read and printed the old information about Xorg. and I know its mechanism has changed. and there was NO via openchrome on the 13.0 disk because I looked for it.

I'm afraid I have to disagree.

Openchrome drivers do indeed exist on the installation DVD and are installed if they are selected in the installation (they are selected by default).

They are installed in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/ and are named openchrome_drv.la and openchrome_drv.so, as usual for xorg drivers.

There are several methods for selecting the drivers -- modify the Device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf manually and specify "openchrome" in the Driver field (then add other variables as desired), or you can use the preferred method of running xorgsetup from the shell as root. That should detect the chipset and fill in the necessary fields.

I've found that the current openchrome drivers work well with newer VIA graphics chips but older ones (notably the CX700 series) will have some problems.

I haven't rebuilt X, I use the default slackware implementation. I have rebuilt the openchrome drivers from the svn snapshots and haven't encountered any difficulties other than those already noted above.

dogbird 11-30-2009 08:48 PM

I found those once I had the right kind of search. the thing I am too dense to understand is the implication that the system will automagically come up. it did not and I could not figure out how to ask it to do so.

still cannot get the tools to work. xorgsetup deletes the "bad" file but does not create a new one

Xorg -configure fails. :(

modprobe will not load the openchrome_drv.so file says all files are not found for any file.

startx defaults to XF86Config with attendent errors.

so my syntax is bad or I am just plain stupid but nothing seems to work right.

MartinS 12-01-2009 01:30 AM

Delete your old xorg.conf, then create a new one with:
Code:

X -configure
and copy the newly created file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf or whereever the xorg.conf goes in Slackware.

Be aware that it's X -configure not Xorg -configure.

Make sure that the Driver in the Device section is set to openchrome:
Code:

Driver "openchrome"
If it still fails post the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log

raconteur 12-01-2009 12:46 PM

I understand your desire to get up close and personal with the elements of the distribution, that is a prime personality trait of slackware users and one I personally share.
Recompiling xorg-server is certainly something that can be accomplished, but it is a non-trivial task.

In your shoes, I would take smaller steps... first, start by using the default slackware implementation of xorg-server and the openchrome drivers.
If that doesn't work, try using the VESA driver (again in the default xorg implementation).
If that doesn't work for you, then there are problems that need to be addressed before attempting to use the openchrome drivers.

If that does work, then obtain and rebuild the openchrome drivers and make sure they work before attempting to rebuild xorg-server.
Before rebuilding xorg-server, generate and save an Xorg.0.log for later comparison.

When you do tackle compiling xorg-server, pay particular attention to the slack-build notes for compilation options.
Once you've built and installed it, try configuring it as above (using xorgsetup) and starting it.
If it fails, then examine the resulting Xorg.0.log to see if you can determine a failing module.
There are dozens of modules in the X implementation, and they all have to get along.

For me, it seems simpler

dogbird 12-01-2009 05:43 PM

X -configure and xorgsetup BOTH say NO DEVICES TO CONFIGURE...

I know the chrome9 is built in dont know how to fix that problem. maybe there is no video --- but wait what is the logon screen. some of this is just plain wrong

I compiled Xorg because I did not know about the builtin Xorg. I compiled the openchrome because I had crome9HC on both of my machines. but that should not have unset the hardware.

and I need to understand the new initialization script setup. so I can install the video default drivers

plus I dont know how the default screens work.

janhe 12-02-2009 05:05 AM

a few questions (please answer them):
-are you using the stock xorg packages now?
-are you sure you uninstalled the version you compiled?
-have you reinstalled all the slackware X packages?

dogbird 12-02-2009 11:59 PM

I reloaded the X window system from the CDROM to the system drive. I saw that XF86 has stubs and indicates it is working again? I know that X -configure tries to run my old XF86Config file. I am modestly familiar with XF86 system setup I will try to see if it is working. The information in my old system data is wrong and the whole system trips over it. once i know that is the problem I can try to address it. I will look to see if xf86 is working. but X -configure does not have a default I understand. It should have rewritten a Xorg.conf but it did not. it did delete it though. but then it picked up my XF86Config file and tried to excute that.

this is modestly insane. the problem with modprobe is it DOES NOT WORK AT THE COMMAND LINE. The other problem is my mouse is insane. non functional. it is plugged in and was working for 9.0 but I cant get gpm to see it at all.

dogbird 12-03-2009 06:54 PM

ok I have worked on the problem some. I cant find the invoke script or program for XF86 xf86 or anything I could find. there are stubs loaded in the X data. so I need to know how to configure the system to see my openchrome_drv.ko I tried putting it in the kernal load file all it did was the tools could no longer see it. so my experiments really did not work I also have to fix the initscript problem too. it is clear that the init sequence has changed. and is not compatible. But I need to tell the system to use openchrome the builtin is OPENCHROM9HC. It would be nice to have a working configure executable or script. X -configure now just lists all the drivers but not openchrome anymore.

1. I need to configure my system by hand. it is really hozed for all kinds of reasons. I have too much data on the system to reformat and start over. I dont care about dead code. it is the scripts I must fix. X and Xorg both malfunction.

I need to edit various system files correctly. my man files are confused. I get references that dont have man pages. sigh. I know how to fix it.

I just need to get some tool working correctly I will try to boot my other system and see what state it is in but that is atick unless I boot from CDROM

dogbird 12-05-2009 05:21 PM

I used the CDROM to boot my other system. Its the default configuration. X -configure will run without overt errors but the screen will freeze with a dead screen no graphics just a blank screen that does not respond. HARD REBOOT!!!

my dedicated system is still unhelpful and is broken. it never gets to this condition

MartinS 12-05-2009 06:31 PM

Try to switch to XAA as acceleration method an disable everything in xorg.conf which has to do with acceleration. If this works you can play around with the settings. ;-)

dogbird 12-08-2009 02:03 AM

Well I need a better description. in my xorg.conf I dont have ANY accelleration. I have lots of thangs that init mouse, keyboard, monitor and openchrome. but this is the stuff the system X-configure put in the xorg.conf.new. I need more information to debug this problem. it has piece and parts that are invovled and I dont know anything about them. it will not allow me to type xinit and only boots with the X -configure event.

MartinS 12-08-2009 03:12 AM

Hint: man openchrome

xorg.conf
Code:

Section "Device"
        Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
        Option "EnableAGPDMA" "false"
        Option "ExaNoComposite" "true"
        Option "NoAccel" "true"
        Option "NoAGPFor2D" "true"
        Option "NoXVDMA" "true"
        Option    "SWCursor"    "true"
        Driver    "openchrome"
EndSection

Of course "ExaNoComposite" will only have some effect if you choose "EXA" as "AccelMethod".

dogbird 12-08-2009 06:42 AM

I will paste that into my xorg.conf. Any port in a storm. I will be back with the results, good, bad or indifferent.

dogbird 12-11-2009 09:27 PM

the bad news is no matter what I do. the video freezes with a blank screen. :( just cant find any way to invoke fvwm or even something else. That is why I originally compile Xorg and openchrome. I get "openchrorm does not have openchromedata structure" as an error. so I dont know exactly what the real problem is so I cant address it.

MartinS 12-27-2009 04:55 PM

Hm,
I have a Notebook with some VIA graphics and tried to compile Xorg-Server and I also got a blank screen. Using the package from my distro it works. So one thing you could do is to look at the Archlinux packages and how they compile stuff. Go to the Archlinux site (http://www.archlinux.org) search for the package, click on "View SVN Entries" and click on PKBUILD. There you can see the configure flags and the other stuff they use to compile the package.

dogbird 12-27-2009 11:34 PM

that is hopeful. but I did replace the configuration from the cd. X -configure finds openchrome and the X -config /root/xorg.conf.new causes my system to freeze and reboot is the only option.

I reinstalled the whole system disk sequence and it still locks up.

dogbird 04-20-2010 11:15 AM

my machine has been down for a while. damn near forever. but I have OPENCHROME and Xorg the problem seems to be that I never have the correct parts to go with the version of Xorg and/or OPENCHROME. it is not clear to me what has happened because i have had peculiar things happen to my windows system.

here is the Xorg.0.log

You might find help on that error from the mailing list:

the bad news is that web page is locked and wants me to login with a password but does not allow my access. I really need help with the error which is apparently some set of other utilities that I dont have any information about

(EE) LoadModule: Module /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/openchromedrv.so does not have a openchromedrvModuleData data object.

I think I have chrome9HC and upgraded to slackware 13.0 and still no joy. I cannot delete the contents of my hd. it contains work that i have been working on for some years. so I got into this change of paragdim. I will compile any peices if I know that I will get an improvement. I really want to run X windows not KDE or any other.
