Openbox Error After Source Install

I installed openbox from source following the directions on the openbox site. Everything seemed to go well and no errors were shown to my knowledge. But, when I ran xwmconfig the openbox entry was not present. Also, I tried to run exec openbox-session but it gave a DISPLAY error, which I took to mean a problem with X. It's my first install from source and it seems somewhat confusing.

is there any particular reason why you installed it directly from source?
you should avoid doing that, as you cannot track the files you install: just build Slackware packages and install those.
another thing you can miss using directly the source, are (if not already present) some Slackware specific configuration files/scripts: in the openbox script from SBo during building of the package, between the other things, a file /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.openbox is added to it (and it's later used by xwmconfig).
so, my suggestion is to remove the openbox you installed from source (try a "make uninstall" from the source folder) and install it using the openbox SlackBuild from SBo.

Ok. But let's say I want to install a program not on Slackbuilds or in alienbob's repos? Like mpv.

the best solution, in my opinion, is to write yourself a SlackBuild script for it: as it's an MPlayer fork, in this case I think maybe you can take the MPlayer one as a base and modify it (but I haven't even had a look at the mpv sources so I'm not sure of this).
you can even search on Google for mpv.SlackBuild to see if others have done work in that sense and eventually borrow their solutions to aid you write your own SlackBuild (I've actually done it and found one ).

if those are not options, try src2pkg.
