Onboard Lan, Optical Mouse problems.

Ok, system.

-----
Dual Boot - Win98, Slack
513 ddr
athlon 2600+
MotherBoard Asus a7v8x sound + lan
-----

1. My onboard lan for the a7v8x doesn't work. I installed the modual for bcm4* series and tried to connect (rp-pppoe) and then tried with the bcm5700 and I had conflicts and stuff which I have no idea what so ever how to fix.

2. I have a Microsoft Optical Mouse (comes with multimedia keyboard). I tried it as PS/2, Busline (don't quite remember) and Microsoft and still nothing.

I could really use your advice/help. I've been working on this for 6 hours (literally).

I seem to recall a post awhile back where the suggestion was to load the video drivers and that would enable the other features of the chipset. I do not remember enough of it though to do a search. But if you have integrated video then you might want do some searching for some drivers for the chipset or search here on LQ using your model/chipset number. Perhaps it will help.

On your mouse, I would think the proper protocol would be IMPS/2. Even if it is USB. The default device setting is for /dev/mouse. That is a simple sym link to a real device. So if it is not set correctly for the mouse then it will not see it regardless of the protocol setting. For a ps/2 port connector the /dev/mouse should point to /dev/psaux. Check by using the command "ls -l /dev/mouse". If it needs to be reset, then use "ln -sf /dev/psaux /dev/mouse" to redefine the symlink. You can search here on LQ and restrict the search to the Slack forum on "wheelmouse" and probably pull up tons of threads.
