office/libreoffice SlackBuild scripts is bad ? Need update ?

Thanks.

This happens a lot with Libreoffice
Just download the newest version, edit the build script and roll it yourself.

Email the maintainer of the script and ask him to update it. Or, grab a package from Eric's repository:

Hi,

You can look at Alien_Bob's;

LibreOffice 4.0.3 packages ready for download (and a rant)

Get the packages from my 14.0 package repository while they are hot! If you are still running Slackware 13.37 you should stick with LibreOffice 3.6.6 for which I also have packages. They are also available from several mirrors. Remember, the mirror sites usually have a bigger bandwidth available than the master site! If you are a mirror administrator, and want to be added to the list, contact me.

Here is the shortlist:

Please try the mirrors whenever available.

I will second (third?) getting LibreOffice from Alien Bob. It worked very smoothly for me when the one from Slackbuilds.org did not.

I'm very happy with Open Office, which is very good for production use on my client's desktops and workstations.

I just setup a brand new Slackware package repository on my company's website:

http://www.microlinux.fr/slackware/

Packages for 32-bit Slackware are here:

http://www.microlinux.fr/slackware/MLED-14.0/pkg/

And here's the link for Slackware64 packages:

http://www.microlinux.fr/slackware/MLED-14.0/pkg64/

The openoffice package is the latest Apache Open Office 3.4.1, which I also use for daily work, and I'm very happy with it.

The openoffice-langpack package currently contains only french and german translations, but it's easy to add other languages. Just run the build script:

http://www.microlinux.fr/slackware/M...fice-langpack/

You may have to comment out the md5sum check though, otherwise the script will exit.

Cheers,

Niki

All I ever do is download the gzipped OpenOffice rpm's from Apache, unzip and untar, do a 'rpm2tgz ./*' and then a pkgtool install. Always works perfectly for me.

Apache OpenOffice (AOO aka) is a great office suite.

But considering AOO to wear more than a year without updates and LibreOffice (aka LO) has been updated during this time, you do not think today is more convenient to use LO instead of AOO least until released version 4.0 AOO?

See you.

I may be wrong, but I'm naturally suspicious of software with a frantic release cycle. More often than not, new features get added in before some basic bugs get ironed out. Please ignore the flamewar potential, but this is one of the main reasons I prefer Xfce over KDE, Firefox ESR over Firefox, and Apache Open Office over Libre Office.

Libre Office has one particularly nasty bug in "Special Copy/Paste". I recently tried to special-copy a very long stream-of-consciousness paragraph from an XHTML page into an ODT document. The operation made Libre Office crash... and Apache Open Office handled it correctly. Earlier this year I deployed Libre Office at one of my client's networks. It must be said that this client uses many advanced features of the office suite. Folks reported a series of bizarre bugs, so I finally reverted all client PCs to Apache Open Office, and everything works fine now.

I have a very pragmatic approach in my choice of applications. I prefer those that JustWork(tm).

OK, thanks for your vision on that question about AOO vs LO actually.

See you.

You seem to be reading and responding to LQ posts using a mail client, therefore you are probably missing a lot of context.
He was referring to the fact that LibreOffice download URLs are only working for the most current version. When a new version of LibreOffice is released, download URLs for older versions stop working because the tarballs are removed from the server.

Because libreoffice keeps only one stable version download link at the time
Code:

http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/stable/<VERSION>
When they update libreoffice, let's say 4.0.2 -> 4.0.3, previous link /stable/4.0.2 disappears and new link /stable/4.0.3 appears. There is a workaround which use alternative download link where they keep every releases (don't be confused with word "old", every release - even newest version - goes there), so you could download it any time. According to slackbuild's description it should be.
Code:

http://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/stable/<VERSION>

but last time I checked /old/stable doesn't exist anymore, so alternative link that works now is:
Code:

http://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/<VERSION>

Slackbuild maintainer could simply use the later URL, but given LibreOffice maintainers nature, these links could change any time, so there is no point using them (at least until download URL's became stable).

digger95 06-17-2013 09:15 AM

I simply used the SlackBuild script for 4.0.2 and changed the version number to 4.0.3. Worked like a charm.

Or am I missing something?

No, I use it that way too. There is only one disadvantage to this approach - you have to manually download slackbuild, source package and then run slackbuild script, clean build environment afterwards, etc. With sbopkg and working slackbuilds it's a lot simpler.

Sounds interesting -- dumb question (not all that familiar with rpm2tgz): rpm2tgz /* winds up with a whole bunch of .tgz's, do you installpgk all those? And what do you do with the desktop-integration files?

Thanks

My experience is the opposite. I was using ApacheOO for long time, and some day in a calc sheet with twelve pages I wanted just one, and tried to delete the others. But at every try AOO crashed.
Delete one page at a time, two, all eleven, always crashed.
I installed LibreOffice, and with the same file, I deleted those 11 pages without problems.
It seems that we are lucky having two major office suites, when one has problems, install the other :)

Sorry for the nosy answer :D Yes install all tgzs. If you need localization do the same with language file.
About desktop integration, convert and install just the "freedesktop" file.

Thanks! I used OO since it was Star Office (before Sun bought that and then turned it loose as OpenOffice). Didn't like it as much as I liked Adobe FrameMaker, and they didn't port Frame to Linux and... I still miss FrameMaker (not available for Linux, just Windows, bah, humbug), a real pleasure to use on Sun SPARC work stations, Frame. Sigh. Wrote a novel with Frame, silly me, and had to export that to, essentially, Word to get it into OpenOffice (pain in the hiney, too!).

I've been using LibrOffice, it's OK (for a Microsoft Office clone, as is OpenOffice, the lowest common denominator). Like templates (don't like to develop templates, just like to use them), LibreOffice didn't have many and too many of those were European-oriented (nothing wrong with that, but, you know, I live in North America and we speak English here and have different ways of doing things -- now I know how Europeans feel about US-specifications in everything).

I have a great deal of respect for Apache and the work that they do and I'm going back to OpenOffice with my eyes wide shut. This is not to say that LibreOffice has anything wrong with it -- seems to be pretty darned OK -- but, well, Apache is Apache and I think I'll go back and stick with 'em for a while.

Maybe I missed something but I don't really see anything nosy in the answer, I'm grateful for the help!

Not mail client, but yes mail client reply syntax because I prefer it over quote syntax of forums software.

No, no, I don't missing the context. I questioning because I don't know the reason.

Talking about fifteen years ago :D I used too, that one with the butterfly and that strange (to say the less) desktop.

You've quoted another user, maybe I should wait for his answer.
Hence the "nosy", nothing to worry about :hattip:

Same here. I did my best to try to like Star Office 5, even though my Linux desktop at the time (Windowmaker, Netscape web browser) had a distinctly East German look to it.

tronayne 06-19-2013 07:47 AM

Ah, yes, the weird butterfly (looked kinda neat on a SPARC 4 and SPARC 5 work station, though). That was back in the "purple" days for displays (whatever happened to the purple days?). Actually, I thought it would have better if they'd used the Death's-head Hawkmoth -- now that would have been a really, really cool logo!
