Nvidia Ethernet - Forcedeth driver problems

Okay, I've been trying to install version 2.6.1 of the Linux kernel. I got it running fine, booting and everything, but my NIC won't work (onboard nForce2 card) so I go here trying to figure out what to do.

Everyone says to use the Forcedeth driver instead of NVIDIA's current drivers. Problem is that this requires a kernel patch, but HOW do I patch the kernel? There arne't any docs to read and these are txt files, not diff files and I have no clue what to do

Help?

(and yes, I've searched the forums for hours, everyone says to patch it, but no one says HOW)

I am having these problems and have tried the forcedeth drivers. Im not sure whats going on with my kernel but its not loading any modules. So this isnt working for me.

Edit: woops I forgot to post how to patch, lol

go into your source directory, lets say /usr/src/linux-2.6.1
Type 'patch -p1 < forcedethXXXXXXXX'

Rerun 'make XXXconfig' look under network for the driver.

Ok, I got the kernel patched, and it compiled fine with the new driver enabled, and when I boot the new kernel it finds the NIC, but after the configuration is done it says something like

get_stats changed after register

...and then hangs the system. I'll have to reboot to get the exact message but that's the jist of it, any ideas?
