Nvidia driver crash on fresh slack12

I have an Inno3D Geforce 6600 card and thought it would be nice to use the Nvidia driver.
I have a fresh install of Slackware and have swapped to the generic-smp kernel but the problem is the same on the huge-smp kernel.
The inbuilt "nv" driver works fine and I have done an xorgsetup which has recognised my monitor, mouse, and graphics card. startx brings up KDE no probs.
I then install the Nvidia driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run) and run the nvidia setup program that modifies xorg.conf.
Now when I do startx the screen flashes a few times and X crashes with...

Backtrace:
0: X(xf86SigHandler+0x84) [0x80c5404]
1: [0xffffe420]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

giving up.
xinit: Connection reset by peer (errno 104): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

I would include /var/log/Xorg.0.log but it is quite big. If I go into xorg.conf and change "nvidia" to "nv" for the driver startx launches KDE fine.

My PC is a 3GHz Pentium4 HT with 1GB memory.
Anyone any ideas?

Thanks
Mark

Without your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and var/log/Xorg.0.log files, I think is a mouse configuration problem. Try use:
Code:
Section "InputDevice"

# Identifier and driver

    Identifier	"Mouse1"
    Driver	"mouse"
    Option "Protocol" "Auto"
    Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"

# Mouse wheel mapping. Default is to map vertical wheel to buttons 4 & 5,
# horizontal wheel to buttons 6 & 7. Change if your mouse has more than
# 3 buttons and you need to map the wheel to different button ids to avoid
# conflicts.

    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7"

EndSection
in your old (default) xorg.conf file (it was renamed xorg.conf.backup by nvidia-xconfig). Personally I don't like nvidia-xconfig, I use always xorgconfig. I am a similar video card
Code:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV43 [GeForce 6600] (rev a2)

I don't think its my mouse definitions as they are working with the "nv" driver. Here are my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log
Code:

The nv driver conflicts with the nvidia driver. If you want to use the nvidia driver, try recompiling the kernel without the nv driver. Or you may be able to get by with just
Code:
modprobe -r nv
I'm not sure about just unloading the module, as I usually just compile without the nv module.

I was getting system freezes with Slackware 12 and NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run.

No problems however with NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9755-pkg1.run

Well, I've compiled my own kernel (using 2.6.22.5) without any graphics drivers enabled and get the same problem.

I've tried Road_Map's xorg.conf same problem. Gone back to the original xorg.conf and modified it to use the nvidia driver, same problem.

I don't see how using NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9755-pkg1.run would help as this doesn't support my graphics card. I may give that a go later though.

In all variations so far startx bombs out in exactly the same place i.e. after the...
(II) resource ranges after preInit:
dumps out a load of numbers.

Any other suggestions of how to overcome this will be appreciated. Has anyone else had the same problem? Did you fix it or have you given up?

Regards
Mark

Sorry but I have never found that at all. I use the nv driver as a backup when playing with settings etc. and don't want to use the nvidia driver. I have both on my system and have no problems at all.

To the OP, if you say your original xorg.conf was working fine then letting the nvidia installer generate a new one might have messed up some settings. What happens if you revert back to your original file and just change the driver from 'nv' to 'nvidia' by hand?
