Yes, STOCK kernels do come from kernel.org but when you install a distro GNU many some given you a selection of different kernels. Slackware provides sevearl different kernels to chose from. Several OS venders "patch" their own tweaks into a distros kernel.
A bare.i kernel is a name from Slackware and is usally a type of kernel that would be found on a rescue disk for a machine with IDE harddrives. This kernel has everything built into it or as modules so it will load on ALMOST ANY machine. If you will note that your machine BOOTED without problem to do the install (loaded a kernel) but will not boot afterwards (something went wrong). I would opt for the wrong kernel, missing modules or a corrupt install.
