now im pretty sure most of that is installed or i wouldnt be in kde right now. When i first installed slackware i had to change the xf86config "Driver" section to "nv" to get kde to start. How can i tell what "nv" drivers i have installed now? Thx

UPDATE : tryed the install with source tar.gz files and it went smoothly. Getting 3000fps in glxgears.

Why are you using RPMs on a slackware system? EVIL!
Get sorce tarballs, extract them, run make install in both of them, if it goes without errors add a line /sbin/modprobe NVdriver in /etc/rc.d/rc.local copy NVdriver from source nvidia Kernel directory to /lib/modules/kern.ver./kernel/drivers/video, edit XF86Config as in the readme, and that should be all. If you get some errors search the site since there are so many threads with Nvidia drivers theres a chance other people had your same problem. Finally, you should really read the Nvidia README.

In the latest version of the nvidia drivers the kernel module has a new name, substitute nvidia for NVdriver in your /etc/rc.d/rc.modules file to load it correctly.
