Noobie Questions (Sorry)
 

Ive searched the slack forum and i cant find an answer to my questions so i hope you guys can help.

Firstly thank to the guys that helped with my APM question yesterday :D


My onboard network card on my Compaq E500 laptop was detected no problems.

I have a 802.11b WiFi card also ......... but it seems that the PCMCIA cards are dead i have no lights on there ?

Is there a module or something i need to enable ?


I have slackware 9.1 can anybody tell me what kernel it comes with ..... as im a noobie ...... i have a little linux experiance but not much..... is upgrading the kernel anybody can do ........ if i back it up can i restore the old one if i mess up the new one.


Im loving KDE .......... im just looking for some new theme's now ..... i have to say after trying .......... mandrake ......... red hat (several versions) and otheres slacky is the best ;)

i can only answer your question on kernel version, just type uname -r, u will see somethimng like 2.4.22, then you know you are using 2.4.22 for Slackware 9.1. If you are interested to upgrade to the latest current kernel from slackware , then get 2.4.25 from www.slackware.com.

To get pcmcia cards to work the pcmcia_core kernel module has to be loaded. As root user type lsmod in a console. Does pcmcia_core show up in the list? Then you would need to load a kernel module for your wireless card. I'm not familiar with wireless cards but from reading various places the wavelan module seems to be the most popular one for wireless cards. You can see what pcmcia modules are on your system by going to the /lib/modules/'kernel version'/pcmcia directory. Where you replace 'kernel version' with the results of uname -r as mentioned in the previous post. The wavelan_cs module is listed in there so try typing in modprobe wavelan_cs in a terminal as root and see if that does the trick.
