noob installing

Hi all,

I just threw in the slackware 9 cd and ran it..it was an easy installation and it said it completed and all however when I rebooted the PC and took the disk out, the PC gave me the error
'No operating system'...

Am i doing something wrong?

There is one primary linux partition on it which I created with cfdisk.

Anyone?

well theres your problem,

ok boot your slack cd, when your at

boot: type mount root=/dev/hdx < replace x with the letter of your harddrive

example:

boot: mount root=/dev/hdx

the log in to the system as root and type liloconfig to install lilo, you can also make a bootdisk for emergencys, to make a bootdisk just type:

makebootdisk

run liloconfig so you don't have to use the disk everytime you t boot slack, lilo can boot all the O.S on your system, as for startx ,, what installation did choose during setup? maybe you didn't install any GUI?

Hi One,

Thx for helping me out with this by the way...

I chose kde during setup. I believe it was already selected by default when setup was going through so I just pressed enter...(unless I mistook it and it actually WASN't going to be installed by default...now i'm thinking that I didn't install it....DOH..guess I have to reinstall.)

So i understand that once KDE is installed all i have to do is run the command startx?

no, you have to configure X. run xf86config, then you should be able to use your GUI.

cool thx....

I tried typing in XF86Config at the command prompt (logged in as root) and i got a file not found error message...hrm, wondering if I have to configure any PATH variables to get this to work..i've tried ./XF86Config and have tried it in the /etc/X11 dir to no avail.

Make sure you have all the X stuff as previously mentioned. Then type as this shows xf86config (notice no caps). Then follow along with the script, answering the questions. Note: you will need your video card specs and the horizontal and vertical synch specs for your monitor. Save it when you are done, then try startx.

OK.

Reinstalled totally. Made SURE that full installation was done.

darkstar login: Root
password: xxxxxxxx

"Insert some weird Quote here"

(I have tried the following...)

root@darkstar:`# xf86config
-bash:xfconfig: command not found
root@darkstar:`# startx
-bash:startx: command not found
root@darkstar:`# ./xf86config
-bash:startx: no such file or directory
root@darkstar:`# ./XF86Config
-bash:startx: no such file or directory

Hrm....?????
