No sound with certain applications
 

I'm running Slackware V12 on a recently purchased HP DX2250 with internal speakers. I know the speakers work because they do when I boot Windows. Also the beep when I receive e-mail under Linux works. I adjusted the volume with alsamixer to no avail.

Don't forget to unmute the volume as well in alsamixer, the mute function can be toggled on (MM) or off (00) with the M button on your keyboard, with the relevant slider selected.

If that's not the problem, then perhaps give a bit more info, eg are you using kde? what is the e-mail program that does work? Is that the only one that works?

If you are using kde, have you tried playing around with the options in Settings>Sound & Multimedia>Sound System?

The beep in e-mail may just be the PC speaker and not the sound card (that's what I get with Thunderbird anyway), so that may not be an indication of a properly configured card. Try running `alsaconf` as root, then run `alsamixer` (as your normal user?) and try muting and unmuting things (one after another -- sometimes MM indicates mute, which it should, but some cards show it as 00 instead, which is supposed to be unmuted. Play around with it.). After each time you run `alsamixer`, you should then run `alsactl store` as root.

If you can't get it working, post the output of `lspci` (as root) and `lsmod` (also as root). It would be beneficial if you mentioned what kernel you are using as well.

I found a tarball on the Realtek website that replaced my current driver. Voila! The sound card now works.
