Well OpenAL came from slackpkg+, alienbob repository. I just now built this one thinking it might make a difference.

Or grab Eric's 32bit OpenAL package and convert that one to a compat32...

But rebuilding makes sure it is built for your system and libraries... I doubt you'd run into issues with with Eric's packages, but since your having problems, probably better to be safe than sorry.

I edited ~/.asoundrc like this:

Code:
 pcm.!default {
   type plug
   slave.pcm {
     @func getenv
     vars [ ALSAPCM ]
     default "hw:1,0"
   }
 }
Now those games give a different error:

Code:
AL lib: alsa.c:344: Could not open playback device 'default': No such file or directory
AL lib: oss.c:179: Could not open /dev/dsp: No such file or directory
Is this progress?

Edit: Actually it made me lose sound completely apparently. I removed it.

If you are going to mess with alsa, avoid '!' ... you can modify this script to write to ~/.asoundrc:

I'm not messing with it, I just deleted that file. I don't think it was leading anywhere toward a solution.
