No sound in any browser after nvidia install
Hi all,
I have a strange problem and cannot find the solution to it. I'm running Slackware 13 on my Acer Aspire 9420 and up to yesterday everything was working fine. Yesterday I installed the nvidia-kernel and nvidia-driver and at first everything seemed to work just fine.
But now if I watch a YouTube video in any browser (Firefox, Chrome, Konquerer) I don't have sound which before the install I performed yesterday worked.
When I watch any movie from DVD or from harddisk in MPlayer then there is perfect sound. Also when using my webcam and headphones I have sound and micro. System sounds also work. It's only in the webbrowsers that the sound is missing.
Can anyone tell me what I'm missing? Worth mentioning perhaps is that there was no xorg.conf present and that one was created by nvidia-xconfig. Does that have anything to do with it?
Again, apart from the browsers sound works perfectly.
The device in my laptop is this:
Code:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
All help is greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,
Eric

I wish I could help, but I have a similar problem, so I'm also in need of a solution. I opened a thread to ask about this too and got no help.
In my case, when I first boot my system, I can play a Youtube video and the sound works, often for the entire video. Sometimes it'll work for one or two more. But then very soon I will get only garbled stuttering noise that sounds like the first few sounds that have been all squashed together and looping constantly.
Only the sound from videos does this. All other sound works perfectly fine. This is on a Slackware 12.2 system with Firefox 3.0.4, but it does the same thing in Konquerer. I've re-installed the latest Adobe Flash player several times, and it makes no difference.
Hopefully someone will have a good answer for you.

Here was my other thread about it. It didn't go far. You may be experiencing some flavor of this.

First confirm the problem actually is the proprietary nvidia drivers. Many times I have done things on my system that I thought was the root cause but in actually was caused by something else I did during the day.
If your video system supports the generic nv driver, then temporarily use that driver. Then test the web browser.
Because the web browser seems to be the affected app, another testing option would be to temporarily rename the $HOME/.mozilla folder and then start Firefox.

I had a problem the other day, sound in all apps except firefox/flash.
The PCM device was muted.
Might be worth a quick check.

Woodsman, in my case I'm using a driver in my xorg.conf called "nv". Is that the generic driver or the proprietary one?

I'm running 12.2 with nividia and proprietary drivers also.
I watch Hulu, Youtube and play Dvd's, listen to music fine.
I also don't use FF from Slackbuilds.
I downloaded FF, laid the FF directory in my home directory and linked to the firefox.sh.
It's simple enough to do and worth a try to see if that fixes the problem.

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies, I changed from nvidia to nv in the xorg.conf file but without result. Then renamed the .mozilla directory but that didn't solve anything either. I also checked that there are no 'mute' setting in the sound mixer.
At this point I'm starting to think that woodsman might have pointed me in the right direction and that it's not the nvidia installation that has changed my sound settings but something else.
Trying to find a solution or at least an indication of where the problem is situated I was reading up on a thread here on LQ that pointed to this link for alsa configuration.
When I ran the commands in regards to alsa from that link the card got detected and installation performed just like it said on that site. But when I ran 'alsamixer' to set the volumes I seem to have only the micro available. Then I noticed that it's defaulting to the USB mic in my new webcam. I can set the volumes on my HDA Intel by using
but it seems that for some reason the browsers use the default device.
So that might be a problem. Anyone an idea how to change the default card to use on Slackware 13?
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards and Happy New Year,
Eric

Small update
Worth mentioning also is that when I installed software for my new camera there were sound libs and software included. Might be that they are the cause of it. Anyone knowledge if one of the following changes the ALSA settings?
Code:
libsndfile (1.0.20)
portaudio (V19)
twolame (0.3.12)
guvcview (1.2.0)
Kind regards,
Eric

Hi speccy,
Thanks a lot for your help, that did it. I once again have sound in my browsers. So funny that it only affected the browsers and nothing else though. Thanks again and a very Happy New Year.
Kind regards,
Eric
