I just recently noticed when my daughter summoned Bob the Builder that I am getting no sound from websites. This is in the Syslog at the moment sound should be issuing from the site:
Jun 22 18:52:32 darkstar modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-1
Jun 22 18:52:32 darkstar modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-1-0
All other sound - CDs, music etc is OK. Anyone help please? I cannot think where to look.
I am getting those same errors in my syslog, but I do get sound from websites. Are you trying to listen to xmms, and the wesite at the same time, that may have something to do with it. Sorry, I could not be more helpful
I have just Flash and three copies of the realplayer plugin (in different places). However, all realplayer stuff is run using realplayer itself rather than the plugin so I can see what is happening, and that works fine. Could this be the problem - lack of plugins? I have plugins enabled but just set those music files from Amazon etc to open in Realplayer.
PS No, I am not trying to run anything else requiring sound at the same time.
I have just seen another post about sound problems in which various aliases for sound-slot and sound-service are listed in the writer's /etc/modules.conf. I checked mine and there is nothing like that. Could this be the problem? Lsmod lists all these sound modules, many of which were linked to this other poster's sound-slot and sound-service aliases:
Well, I just tried another browser - Firefox - and although I get the same messages about unable to locate the sound modules I have sound from websites! So the problem is with Opera, not Slackware. Should have tried this first - sorry to waste time everyone. Off to the Opera forum. Thanks anyway.
PS I have the Opera plugins folder linked to firefox so they both use exactly the same plugins - so no problem there presumably
Found the problem - seems others with Opera also had it. /dev/dsp is a link to /dev/dsp0 and while /dev/dsp is chmodded to 777 /dev/dsp0 was not. I changed that and all is now well. Presumably firefox must get its sound from somewhere else?
