No PS/2 controller found
 

I recently downloaded Slackware 12. Using the default kernel that boots from the DVD I performed an install on my home built system. The system utilizes a 680i SLI EVGA motherboard. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get my mouse to work when running X-Windows. If I look at the output of dmesg the pertinant message would seem to be "PNP: No PS/2 controller found. Probing ports directly." I can provide the entire dmesg output if that would help someone help me troubleshoot but I thought it might be some common thing I'm overlooking. The keyboard does work and the mouse does not. The keyboard mouse combo is a Microsoft Wireless/Optical Combo (Wireless Multimedia Keyboard 1.0A). Finally of course the combo works with Windows ... I'm not 100% positive but I think this same keyboard mouse combo worked on an older 2.4 kernel on a different motherboard of course.

I use IMPS/2 protocol for mine. not sure what kind of mouse you have but you could run the xconfig utility from the command line and set the mouse from there or edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and set the mouse to auto (protocol not driver) and see if that works.

Well I actually tried IMPS/2 when I did a Slackware 11 install. I did that by killing the gpm process that was running (kill -9) and then constructed a command line to try various different drivers. I did not do that with Slackware 12 but I'm under the impression that it is related to not being able to detect the PS/2 controller. I'll take another cut at IMPS/2 tonight when I get home from work.

Try mouseconfig command in your Slackware 12 system, if you are using USB like mouse, chose USB, reboot or Kill and rerun gpm. Then check the /etc/X11/xorg.conf in the Section on Mouse Change the Protocol To IMPS/2 "NOT PUT PS/2 OR USB" and restart the X Server. Try this.

If you do not see the mouse working in Console Mode never you will see the mouse working in X Server.

Thanks for the message darklink2058 ... I'll try the specifics you suggest. Previously, I had simply killed and rerun gpm with different settings and edited the xorg.conf file separately but not exactly together in the combination you suggest. I'll give it a cut tonight. Although I'm concerned as it doesn't detect any PS/2 controller ... yet.

It is so strange, I has the same problem change to USB mouse, or change your ps2 mouse, be ware that no connected into the keyboard ps2 port (it happend to me).

But it is true, if you do not see your mouse in the Text mode, never you will see in your X Server.

Well everything suggested did not work. I was able to find a reference on the Internet around some sort of trouble with the PS/2 controller on a 680i SLI motherboard and Linux support. I've been unable to dig up the details ... it is possible that it isn't currently supported without running something a little 'exotic'. Has anyone heard anything around that??

The last change that you have is Recompile your Linux Kernel with that support. 2.6.xx

Are you saying recompile with IMPS/2 support in specific? I'm not sure I understand.
