No orinoco_pci in 2.6.37.6-smp?!?

I have wireless card with Prism2.5 chip (XI626 card)and previous Slackware 13.1 worked fine with it. I used
orinoco_pci module and it worked fine, however the latest Slack 13.37 gives me "FATAL: Module orinoco_pci not found." when I try to load it. Now I'm using hostap driver and I don't like it cause it gives me poor signal strength with my ADSL router. The orinoco has given me much better signal and overall functionality was much better with it.
Can anyone help me here? What is a problem here? Do I need to recompile my kernel or what?

You need to blacklist the orinoco stuff and use hostap. I have the same issue with a D-Link DWL-520ve1 pci card. I never did get the orinoco driver to work as far back as 12.2. hostap works ok, BUT !! you need to make sure you get the correct firmware image for your card and load that with hostap-utils (prism2_srec I think...) if its as lame as the D-Link. The firmware makes one heck of difference in terms of signal.

Also, if you want to use WPA, you will need to use the hostap driver. orinoco is WEP only IIRC.

I'm not sure I can follow you here. I do not need to blacklist orinoco since it is not listed in /modprobe.d
and if it was listed, it simply doesn't exist as module. When I try to load orinoco_pci module it tells there
is no such module. I used it in Slackware 13.1 and it worked out of the box without need to manually load it.
I am now on hostap_pci which works but has very weak signal strength. I tried to find on the net do I need to
patch this module or anything else and I couldn't find anything that could be useful. Perhaps I'm missing here
something. Also, I installed hostap-utils which I found as an .rpm package from OpenSuse.
I tried 'iwconfig wlan0 txpower 30mW' but I ended up with:
Code:
Error for wireless request "Set Tx Power" (8B26) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported.
I am using Z-com XI626 card with newest possible firmware. This card worked fine and flawless for me for so
long time.
Is there something that can be done with this? Can I somehow rise up the signal strength?
Where is the orinoco_pci? Is it possible that this module is not supported anymore?

Here are the orinoco modules on my Slackware 13.37:
Code:
locate orinoco

/lib/modules/2.6.37.6/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/orinoco/orinoco_nortel.ko

and

'orinoco_pci' is for the older kernels (ie PCI card as opposed to USB or PCMCIA) and is now called 'orinoco' so that's the one to load if it is not automatically detected.
Make sure, however, that you chack 'lsmod' for any conflicting kernel modules.
