no internet after compiling 2.6 kernel

I'm installing on a laptop and going from kernel 2.4.22 to 2.6. After the compile I boot into the 2.6 kernel and have no internet. In 2.4.22 my wireless was automatically detected and I didn't have to load any other modules. I used make menuconfig and didn't change any pcmcia settings.

Well, did you compile support for you NIC? PCMCIA is one thing, but leaving out support for your NIC being used is another..

when I use lynx I get the error "Alert! Unable to access document" I looked in my 2.6 lib/modules and there is no pcmcia folder. In my 2.4 lib/modules folder there is a folder for pcmcia devices. Could that be the problem? Also I thought if I used menuconfig to recompile it would take my current packages and just give me the option of adding new ones. Where can I find teh pcmcia options in menuconfig? SO I can go back and recompile them into the kernel.

They're there, can't remember exactly under the new kernel. Just browse thru all options when doing menuconfig, as if you don't already have a config file to compile from, you will want to go thru all of menuconfig to create a new one to compile from.
