NIS password change problem

hi,

I have got trouble with changing NIS-user passwords and some mailing lists advised me to check my PAM config.

As i've learnt by now, slack doesnt support PAM.

My network clients and file server are all slack boxes where users access their data through a NIS/NFS set up.
The users cant change their password . when they try to do so, they get an error saying : user xyz was not found in /etc/passwd

1-I still dont know if at all the above problem has got anything to do with PAM
2-what is the procedure that slackware follows to change a password? how can i solve the problem?

Is the NIS master password server 'rpc.yppasswdd' running, which is started in /etc/rc.d/rc.yp? If so, are the users using command 'yppasswd' to change their password?

hi,
keeping in view that I had already run rpc.yppasswdd on both clients and server:
1-I run yppasswd on the client and it gave me the following error:'yppasswd not running on the NIS master "my-nis-server.my-nis-domain" ' what should i do?
2-I looked in the yppasswd man page and it said the command is obsollette and best avoided.it recommended "passwd"instead. any comment?
3-I had the same setup on redhat9 before and it was working relatively perfectly with "passwd" command.unfortunately i've deleted all the settings(reformatted)so i have to provide all services again including this one(changing password).
