I just installed Slackware 11.0 and can't get my PCI network card working. I'm a Linux newbie, so forgive me if I have a hard time understanding. It's a DEC 21142/41 rev.41 NIC. Thanks in advance for your help!
May be because you don't have a module for this NIC and it is doesn't have support from the default 2.4.33.3 kernel you are running(i assume you are running default kernel with Slackware 11.0)
In order to find your kernel version do:
uname -r
Also kindly post the output of the following three commands:
1)lsmod
2)ifconfig
3)ifconfig -a
lsmod lists the modules loaded currently
ifconfig gives the information about all the network interfaces which are up.
ifconfig -a gives information about all network interfaces(both up and down)
Since the NIC doesn't work, I have to use my other machine to type the output of these commands, so if I miss something important let me know and I'll post it.
ifconfig - command not found (bash shell)
lspci - 02:05.0 Ethernet controller: DEC 21142/43
lsmod - lists lots of stuff, let me know what I module I'm looking for
With a quick google the DEC 21142/43 appears to be tulip compatable.
If it is not being loaded try the command:
modprobe tulip
Depending on the distribution /sbin may or may not be in the regulars users path which is why you saw the command not find error. try:
/sbin/ifconfig -a
modprobe tulip started the tulip module fine, still no network though. /sbin/ifconfig -a didn't work either - is it possible that my installation is bad since ifconfig is nowhere to be found? Just as a small side note, how can I disable the random quotes on bootup? Thanks again.
I think the installation was bad because once the setup GUI started, it never asked to setup networking, and most of the networking files did not install. I ended up downloading the 10.2 discs and had a successful install with networking perfectly fine. I assume I can now use my 10.2 system to download 11.0 and upgrade with the hope that it won't remove the network previously installed by the 10.2 version?
