nfsd Input/output errror

well i've tried everything and read everything but it won't work.
I'm trying to set up a nfs server, but when i try to run rpc.nfsd it hangs for a while(5 minutes) and then says Input/output error. I've tried killing portmap and mountd and turning them all back on. I ran rpcinfo -r and portmap and mountd were running but when i tried to run nfsd it just hangs for a while and says Input/output error. I tried editing /etc/exports so that it was empty i even tried deleting it all together. I tried rebooting but it hangs during that as well. /var/log/messages talks about portmapper. Any help would really help. thank you.

thanks

thanks a lot for the reply. I already tried that stuff. rpc.nfsd hangs even if /etc/exports is empty. Maybe the rpc.nfsd binary is trashed. I'm going to try to reinstall nfsd and see if that works. I really don't think it should be this complicated. Seems like it should just be like three easy steps. thanks again.
