I just tried the no_root_squash option and it didn't work either.
The permissions on
/var/www is rwxr-xr-x.

Have you have an entry for the server in the client's /etc/hosts file and and entry for the client in the server's /etc/hosts file?

That didn't work either.
For the client machine:
Code:
# For loopbacking.
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.100 homeSlack.homeSlack homeSlack
192.168.1.101 oldSlacky.oldSlacky oldSlacky
# End of hosts.
For the server machine:
Code:
# For loopbacking.
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.101 oldSlacky.oldSlacky oldSlacky
192.168.1.100 homeSlack.homeSlack homeSlack
# End of hosts.
Where 192.168.1.100 is the IP of the client and 192.168.1.101 is the IP of the server.

errr... The two machines should be in the same domain.
Like so..
Code:
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.101 oldSlacky.local oldSlacky
192.168.1.100 homeSlack.local homeSlack
I'm not certain that this is what's causing the problem -- but that's at least one thing to look at

I just use what
netconfig spit out.
I edited both host files to xxx.local and that still didn't work.
I'm still not sure if I have all the services running on the client that I need.
ps aux on the client gives this:
Code:

I see the portmap running but I don't see any of the other services that the NFS site said I needed. Am I missing something.

Can the two machines ping each other by name and IP address?
If not, you need to go back to square 1 and reconfigure the network on each machine.
No sense setting up NFS, SAMBA, or ssh without a working network.
I have not seen that you stated you ever had a working network connection. Based on your comments regarding /etc/hosts I have my doubts.
Remove any entries from hosts.allow and hosts.deny and try to ping each machine from the other.
Also, put the slackware CD in and install the entire contents of the /n directory to the client machine. There's a chance that you may have left something out by accident when you excluded apache. In the future, install everything and just don't start the service if you are not using it. A full Slackware install contains far less extra crap than other distros. It does not pay to leave out stuff.

A shot in the dark: I wasn't getting the client side working either...Had it all setup, kernel, etc...
Was scratching my head too....Then I deleted everything in my /temp dir for another issue, and then rebooted. Then I saw all the NFS stuff during boot, and no problems since.
I have no idea why.

I can ping either machine from the other so that's not a problem.
I emptied the /tmp directory, restarted, and it still doesn't work.
I guess I'll try installing the Apache stuff and see if that works.

How is the NFS share listed in fstab?
Mine looks like this:
Code:
bertha:/data /mnt/data-n nfs auto,user 0 0
This will auto mount the nfs exported directory /data on the server bertha to /mnt/data-n directory on the client.
Try this if you don't have it this way allready and see what errors occur when it tries to load the share at boot time.

Here's my fstab entry right now. I think I found this example on the NFS site, I don't remember exactly.
Code:
192.168.1.101:/var/www /mnt/oldSlacky nfs rw 0 0
I'll try changing it when I get home and see what happens on a reboot.

Sorry to bump this again.
I finally got around to installing the latest Apache stuff on the client machine and I still can't get NFS to work. I keep getting the same "authentication failed" message I've gotten from the beginning.
Here's my updated config files FWIW:
/etc/hosts on the client
Code:
# For loopbacking.
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.100 homeSlack.local homeSlack
192.168.1.101 oldSlacky.local oldSlacky
/etc/hosts on the server
Code:
# For loopbacking.
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.101 oldSlacky.local oldSlacky
192.168.1.100 homeSlack.local homeSlack
/etc/hosts.allow on the server
Code:
portmap: 192.168.1.100
lockd: 192.168.1.100
rquotad: 192.168.1.100
mountd: 192.168.100
statd: 192.168.1.100
/etc/hosts.deny on the server
Code:
portmap:ALL
lockd:ALL
mountd:ALL
rquotad:ALL
statd:ALL
/etc/hosts.allow and
/etc/hosts.deny are both empty on the client machine which is the way they're supposed to be as far as I can tell.

For NFS4 on debian add the following to hosts.allow
For NFSv4 you need to add the following to the hosts.allow file. At least for Debian :-)
# NFS Mounts
portmap : 123.123.123.123
rpc.mountd : 123.123.123.123
mountd : 123.123.123.123
idmapd : 123.123.123.123
Replace 123.123.123.123 with you IP range you want to allow.
