There is a lot of fanless laptops coming out now since last year with the Intel Skylake processors, and I would suggest that the new Slackware version includes support for these, or else it will be useless for many. I got my new Asus PC in December as my old one suddnely got a need for repair. I had to do a lot of tweaking to get it up and running after installing 14.1 (touchpad, network, screen and more not working). I can post what I did if it is useful for someone. The essence is that these laptops now works only with the 4.4-rc6 (and rc5) kernel, and with a small hack in one of the i2c driver files, as well as some other upgrades and adjustments.
I hope my non-sense of humour will be understood at least a little
I'm probably the world master at being unconvincing, but I have some idea for the next release number. Why not use some irrational number? For example 14.159265358979.... It would be nice to have a Slackware pie once in a while (edit: this gave me another idea, maybe it could be pi^e=22.459...? It would celebrate almost 23rd anniversary)
Chris, I think that might be appropriate for Debians next release.
"Pat Volkerding and I also toyed around with the idea of merging Debian and Slackware too, but that never happened, mostly because Pat thought the distributed development model would never work."
well it sounds like he seriously considered it. From an interview from Apr 01, 1994
Quote:
Ian Murdock (of the Debian distribution) and I have tossed around the idea of a merger since last fall. It's possible that this could eventually happen.
Chris, I think that might be appropriate for Debians next release.
I suppose so, but I do not know much about Debian even if I acknowledge their tremendous contribution to the Linux user community.
My suggestion transcends puerile inter-distribution feuds. The world reacted in awe at Job's death, yet Murdock passed away relatively unnoticed. I am not in a position to influence Slackware's development in any regard, but I do hope that if an arbitrary number is to be chosen for the next release, it would also be a statement of solidarity within the Linux community.
