I'm a total newbie to linux (so I'm sorry if this is a stupid question), and just got done installing Slackware 10.
I got through the install fine, but then, when I went to reboot after the install finished, it said something along the lines of "Linux 01 01 01 01 01 01 01.............." So I put the boot floppy in, and it went into the command line[?], So I logged in as root, and made a new user. And I can login as boardinbum (the user I made) but then it just says "boardinbum@darkstar:~$"
So I'm not sure how to actually boot into KDE or GNOME, or any of those.
Any help?
P.S. In the installation, I set GNOME as the default window manager[?].
type `startx` to start up your window manager, that should get you started.
try a google search for 'linux commands' or 'shell commands' to find more commands, there are lots of listings out there of what they do and how to use them.
I actually found the answer to my question right before you posted that. But thank you.
I was also wondering, once in GNOME, what's the easiet way to switch to fluxbox or kde?
The strange lines of output you are getting when trying to boot off you harddisk indicate one of two things:
1.) you did not install a boot loader at all
2.) you did install one, but did not configure it correctly
If you have installed or want to use lilo for your boot-loader - I could help you in setting it up correctly
If you do not install a boot-loader, you will always have to use your floppy - and hope it never fails you (floppies are not very reliable - especially when used all the time)
Where did you try to install the boot-loader onto? With LILO I've found that (on single-boot machines), I've never had a problem when loading onto the MBR

I did install LILO. The first time, I installed it to the root superblock, and it gave me that problem. Then I tried installing it to the MBR this time... Same problem.
Some help with setting up an internet connection would be much appreciated too.
I'm on DSL, and have a D Link router, and a Netgear FA310TX network card in the computer.

...I'm pretty sure I know how to configure it, I just don't know where to go to configure it.
netconfig doesn't work on Slackware.
so we can see if it is correct or where possible problems are...
Can't really help on setting up a DSL-connection - because I'm on dial-up modem-line and never had DSL before - but it's mostly a matter of configuring your ethernet-card - I don't know how this is done in Slackware.
