new to slackware 9.1, not what i expected


I have recently installed slackware 9.1 on my computer.

It doesnt have a gui? it seems to be all command line or whatever. did i do something wrong

it says

darkstar login:

then i type root and it says i have mail
and then it says

root@darkstar:~#

is this supposed to happen? is this really slackware 9.1?

This is how all Slackware versions are. Firstly I recommend running the adduser command and create a user. Then try logging into that user and type startx to see if it goes into a gui, if not, you must run xorgconfig, but since you decided to use a much older version, the command would probably be xf86config.

Slackware always has a gui, but it never goes into it automatically, it always drops you at the CLI.

Welcome to Slack, but a lot has changed since 9.1 - and not just the Slackware foundation. The apps and desktops are a long way from there.

I suggest you get to Slack 11 before investing too much time with 9.1, even though a lot of the basic stuff will carry over.

Hi there,

Yes, welcome to Slackware. It's a brilliant distro - but it is quite difficult to master.

Setting things up like a GUI, device drivers for various bits of hardware and all the other things Windows users take for granted can seem like a chore - but it is worth it in the end.

You will end up with a lean, mean, killing machine of a linux box that does exactly what you need it to.
