You need to change the run level in order to get X to start up on it it's own. You need to modify the /etc/init file and changed the run level to 4, reboot and then X will start up on it's own

Its /etc/inittab
change the number to 4 as shown below

# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:4:initdefault:

Thats will directly take you to runlevel 4 (GUI)

I dont know How to automount flash drive but when I installed dropline-gnome it does it automatically. So if you have plans for installing gnome, don't worry abput it.

in fstab

Code:
/dev/sdX1 /mnt/usb vfat auto,user,rw 0 0
i think should work...

where X is the 'next' sata drive available to use, i.e. for my IDE machine its 'sda1' for my sata machine its 'sdb1' (sda already being used for my HD)

I use fluxbox and gkrellm, then set gkrellm a 'secondary' device as USB, then when it mounts it shows up, and if it doesnt, I just click it.

Follow what bioe007 just told ya about mounting. One of the joys/curses (depending how you look at it) of Slack is that it takes a minimalist approach and only automounts the bare essentials which is mainly just your hard disk. The rest you have to configure yourself.
