new printer

I'm looking to get a new printer to replace the old "crap" HP Deskjet 722C. Any favorites that are easy to install on Slackware 9.0. If I can install the 722C, I can install anything but I want no headaches. I've been looking at the HP DeskJet 5550 Inkjet Printer. Anyone have that one? I'm particulary looking for speed.
How about a good laser printer. Any suggestions?
thanks

For printer suggestions and information, the best site is:

http://www.linuxprinting.org

There, you will find a lot of useful information, especially on the configuration and support of different printers.

Yes, I agree. I used linuxprinting.org many times. But I'm looking for personal experiences, preferences. Do you have a particular printer that you like or dislike. I currently have a deskjet 722C and it requires me to download PPD file. And the printer is old and slow. I would like to try a laser printer.

It depends on your budget and usage type. Downloading the ppd file is only done once. It is equivalent to the driver in windose (although it is not), it is just a configuration file that tells CUPS how to massage the information to be printed.

Personally I like laser printer because it is fast and cheaper then ink printer. You can go though the list in linuxprinting.org to check out the level of support in Linux and based on that list you pick out those who are best supported for your consideration.

I only have experience with HP LaserJet 2100TN, can't get the jetdirect to work cause the stupid software only runs in Win NT or Win 98. Anyhow, I hook it up to a dedicated Slackware 9.0 machine with two old tiny SCSI harddisk to be my print server. Runs CUPS on it. print from my Mac OS X and Slackware 9.1 beautifully. Anyhow, LJ 2100 has been replaced with newer model.

I'm using an HP 5552 which I guess probably isn't much different from a 5550, just been printing out 34 pages mainly text and it took 10 minutes or so, so you don't have to worry about it setting the paper on fire - otherwise quality to my jaded eyes is good and the bit I usually look at, cost £40.
