If you search the forums, yes, you will see there have been many people who have problems with the new Nvidia driver (version 5328 or some such). I had to go back to the 4496 pkg2.run version. It works fine. With all the problems I've read at LQ, I wonder why Nvidia hasn't addressed this.
I got the same problems. I did everything right, and all I got for the install was a "black screen of death."
Nvidia drivers (4496) worked for me with both 2.4 and 2.6 kernel.
Although nvidia doesn't mention it, I could never get the drivers to
work when using a console frame buffer. Lose frame buffer and it
always seems to work. Anyone have the nvidia drivers work with the
frame buffer?
Hey, I was having the same problem, blank screen, regardless of which driver version I was using. I added the following lines to my XFree86Config-4 and now it works, maybe this will help you...

Not exactly sure I follow you, but let's try. This is in my /etc/lilo.conf, so I assume I'm using a framebuffer
Code:
VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256
vga = 773
and the Nividia driver works okay, but it's the 4496 pkg2 version, not the 5328 or whatever is the current one.
