New kernel, more problems

After days of trying to get my sound working with ALSA, I found out my sound chip (Onboard-VIA8235) isn't supported in kernel 2.4.20, which forced me to upgrade my kernel early than I would've liked to. I setup lilo and the makefile and did:
make mrproper
make menuconfig
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
make
make install
make modules
make modules_install
Well, lemme tell you, everything goes fine, until I run startx (I use a text login) which the first time my mouse turned off (the light went off) and then when I did CTRL+ALT+TAB to go to the top menu it crashed. the second time it worked, -the mouse, and my xfree86 was set-up normally the first time, only this time did I mess with my mouse settings to get the scroll working. Also, my net won't work, it opens mozilla.org/start but no other sites work, mozilla.org, google, turbo10.
The mouse happens with the 2.4.21 and 2.4.22 kernels. The net only happens in 2.4.21 because I couldn't even get X started in 2.4.22
Is there something I forgot in the install? I installed the USB HID and that other thing (forgot the name, can't check because Linux is screwed).
Also, if it helps, I installed everything into the kernel instead of modules (well the ones that would let me)
P.S Even if I boot my old version of slack with the 2.4.20 kernel it does the same thing and uses the 2.4.21 kernel
Thank you very much for your help

Yup, mutiple times. It never worked. I might as well add, my LAN connection is obtained from an onboard connector, the 8139.

This may seem like a totally dumb question, but did you remember to put the new kernel in /boot and load it with lilo?

cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-foo
(edit /etc/lilo.conf to make vmlinuz-foo bootable)
lilo

I've overlooked that sometimes when installing new kernels Also, I've had better luck using modules, rather than building stuff right into the kernel. I just end up with fewer problems that way.

Yup, everything works until I start X. It boots fine, says it's kernel 2.4.2(1)(2) (depending on which I'm using). Then I start X, and lose my mouse. I also can't get to any pages on the net. When I try to boot with my old kernel as well, it boots with my new one.

//Edit\\ I picked up 2.4.3 and my mouse still sucked. I ran XFree86 -configure and it said my mouse was /dev/mouse so that's what I put in my XF86config file. No luck, I'm able to boot into the old kernel now, and it works fine, except I get a sound error on startup. With the other kernels I don't get any errors, just no mouse.

Thanks again for any help
