new kernel for slackware doesnt support mice

i have a trouble when compiling my new kernel-2.4.24 on my slacky9.0(2.4.20), at first compiling finished sucessfully, but when i restart my computer, new kernel seems not to be recognize my mice. the eror message is: /dev/mouse is not found. then i try to find it at /dev, but it still aint found. same as /dev/sda1, so i cant mount my usb flash disks. Help me pelase, i couldnt start my X anymore because mice is not found. What should i do??should i recompile 2.4.24 and reconfigure them? thanks for the solution

/dev/mouse is usually just a symlink to /dev/input/mice
You can recreate /dev/sda1 by running /dev/MAKEDEV sda
But be sure about what you did because a kernel compile shouldn't touch dev files unless udev is used (which is in 2.6.X).

Is your mouse serial?

I had a problem on one of my old boxes where the mouse (COM1) was conflicting with the modem (COM3). So, I moved the modem to COM4 and everything worked.
