Purely as an FYI...
I've been having quite a bit of 'trouble' with Slack14 + Ivybridge.
It install perfectly, but gets into a big freeze mode if I try to fire up X.
I'm going to be 'playing' with various versions of the kernel, libdrm, mesa, DDX etc to see if I can find out what 'fixes' it.

I've been using Slackware since sometime in the prior millenium, so I'm probably too old to be called a newbie? <Hehe>

Specifications
--------------
MoBo: Asus P8B75-M LX
RAM: 4GB DDR1333 (will throw in another 4GB once I get the issues sorted)
HDD: 2 * WD10EZEX (configured as 1TB using RAID-1 via mdadm)
O/S: Slackware14 (tried both 32bit and 64bit versions)

NB: It works like a charm with an old NVidia PCIE card installed, but not on the MoBo graphics system.

In theory yes. But since the intel graphics core uses up half your die or package size, you end up with half the cpu cores that you could have had. So you will aways feel an itch to upgrade the cpu. At least I felt the itch, and I finally succumbed. ;) Even if process-wise the cpu was a step back (from 32 nm to 45 nm).

As it's going to spend most of it's life encoding audio and editing photos I particular fancy the Sandybridge/Ivybridge I5s/I7's. The thing is Slackware 14 is a bit behind the recommended graphics stack on some packages (although not far behind it has to be said).

A $25-30 AMD 5450/6450 or nVidia G210 is about as fast as the newest intel HD intergrated video for 3D.

If you want to use CPU heavy programs (eg audio/video encoding) and/or programs that sometimes at least have the capability to use the GPU (eg photo editing) having a standalone GPU is better than using the intergrated video. This is because onboard video will use some of your main system RAM, and RAM I/Os, and in the case of the intel HD intergrated video, will also use some of the CPU cache for video.

Have you a primary graphics card? For example a nvidia or ati card. If so try blacklisting the intel graphics that is built in.

Heads up

Attention Slackware 14 users: If you want to upgrade libdrm then ATI, nouveau or Intel X modules, I suggest you try the versions provided in /testing ;)

Thanx HEAPS for the welcome. (Slackware people _ARE_ a friendly bunch... :) )

The onboard intel graphics of the Asus P8B75-M LX MoBo is by way of the IvyBridge embedded iGPU in association with the Intel B75 express chipset. This is the setup I've been having 'issues' with using Slackware 14. (When I threw in an old NVidia PCIE graphics card I had floating about to confirm it was an issue with the Intel GPU subsystem, it was flawless)

Technically speaking, I don't require ANY graphics on the machine. (It's only being used as a Samba server and will not even be connected to a monitor & keyboard).
I'm just being pedantic slacker, so I'm going to see if I can get it running as it should and, in doing so, I might be able to share the results with other slackers experiencing the same issue. (It's even plausible that I'll need to flash a BIOS update onto the MoBo to make it work... Only time will tell)

My Asrock Z77 Extreme 4/i7 3770k runs flawlessly with Slackware64 14. I didn't run into any problems with 3.2.29 and libdrm-2.4.33/xf86-video-intel-2.19.0, but went to libdrm-2,4,39 and xf86-video-2.20.8 from testing because the later intel driver is known to be faster on ivybridge. I have been trying the 3,4,12 and 3.5.5 kernels built using the /testing configs with some minor alterations to the processor type and latency config. Both both run very well, I can't see much between them graphics wise. Nexuiz works very well with everything cranked up :) The only glitch I stumbled across was non graphics related; since 3.5 the usb modules compile differently and the mkinitrd command generator script in /usr/share/mkinitrd couldn't build the initrd with all of the modules needed-a bit of a problem when you end up at the luksOpen prompt without a keyboard-I used a handwritten mkinitrd command and all is quiet again:)

Slackware runs fine with Intel ... but like the people said, need to follow the -current

treb_vb 10-10-2012 05:43 PM

I'm not sure (yet), but I MIGHT have found some 'hints' as to my problems above.
I followed some posts on freedesktop between 'felix.engemann' and 'chris wilson' (whom I consider to be the 'driving force' behind linux intel graphics).
It's quite possible that the issues I've been experiencing stem from the fact that my CPU (I5-3470) is HD2500-based and not HD4000-based.
From what I can gather, on an HD4000-based CPU, each of its 16 EUs can handle 5 threads while on an HD2500-based CPU, each of its 6 EUs can handle 8 threads.

I'm wondering whether the versions of DDX and / or Mesa I've been playing with on Slack14 have been incorrectly assuming my CPU has a lot more threads available than reality?

Just for giggles, I'm going to try setting up a build environment for DDX / Mesa etc over the next few days to tinker a bit.
(Translation: Preparing myself for a STEEP learning curve! I'm betting it will be both FUN and FRUSTRATING... LOL)

Edit: (Rather than adding a new post, I've edited this one)
I've updated the Asus P8B75-M LX BIOS from 0405 to 0606 and that didn't help anything!
I also tried using the later libdrm + xf86-video-intel packages in testing on the install DVD... Just as bad!!!
However...
I then spotted an article that mentioned (among other stuff) turning OFF the DRI subsystem (using an xorg.conf override).
Amazingly enough, that SEEMS to have fixed it!!!
(While I was at it, I also enabled SNA too, so I'm not yet sure which change is the good one. My 'guess' is DRI)

treb_vb 10-17-2012 03:31 AM

I should have an I7-3770 CPU within the next day or two.
It'll be 'interesting' to see how that one goes with the 'vanila' Slack14 installation.
The I7-3770 includes HD4000 GPU with a bunch of additional EUs that don't exist on the I5-3470.
It will be VERY interesting to see if this HD4000 works with DRI turned back on... (I've switched it OFF on the I5-3470 to make things 'stable')

treb_vb 10-21-2012 02:47 AM

My beefier CPU (I7-3770 instead of I5-3470) arrived today, so I might 'play' with it for a while tomorrow (on another 'fresh install' of course).
It will be interesting to see if the change in GPU (HD2500 -> HD4000) makes ANY difference at all?

kristizz:

I recently bought a complete system (this one...), which, btw, is cheaper now than 2 week ago...

I had to go with "Legacy BIOS" option and that didn't matter to me and I skipped a Windows partition this time around.

The onboard NIC I replaced with Intel 10/100/1000 and it worked OOTB.

Slackware14_64+Multilib has been flawless on this new box and I couldn't be more pleased with this purchase.
