new Intel driver is crashing X

I don't have crashes very often but some dialogs are too transparent to be seen clearly (see attached).

I remember that when I installed -current this January, intel driver and kde blur such dialog backgrounds with something like fog. That feature was extremely nice but it's gone now.

Edit: kwin gives this error:

kwin(13368): glCheckFramebufferStatus failed:  "GL_NO_ERROR"

This seems to prevent popup windows from blurring the background.
I don't know how to download the January version of -current so I cannot compare it with today's -current. But I'm sure it worked in January.

No problem here with my intel GM45 chipset using libdrm-2.4.25, mesa from git and 2.6.39-rc3 kernel.

I observed an interesting and annoying bug when using ThinkPad X60s with Slackware 13.1. I described in that thread: Mozilla Firefox and Flash Player issues. I mean here the problem mentioned at the end of the first post (after asterisks) and in the second post. So far it’s unsolved. ThinkPad X60s uses 945GM chipset and i915 kernel module. So I ask you to run Firefox, to try the images mentioned in my thread and to report the results here. I’ll be very grateful to you for your expertise.

I observed a few other rare problems concerning ThinkPad X60s video card but all of them are difficult to reproduce and occurred merely one to three times during half a year of constant work with that machine so I didn’t described them.

For me the combination of GM45-Chipset with x86_64, Mesa 7.10.2, libdrm-2.4.25, xf86-video-intel-2.15.0 with i915 enabled kernel 2.6.38.2 works fine.

Also no problems with older releases of those packages.

But I noticed a performance loss since some weeks ago (unfortunately I dont know, related to which update, but could me mesa or kernel)
Testcase glxdragon (https://launchpad.net/glxdragon) went down from around 30 to 15 fps.

Re-Edit: I spoke too early, a complete X crash has meant I am retreating to the older intel driver...

Using some of Darth Vader's tactics, I've been able to make my 945GM crash. Clearly I had not been trying hard enough.

After testing nearly every permutation of libdrm/mesa/xf86-video-intel, I have seen crashes with every combination. The very latest stuff seemed like it might have a slight stability edge, but the crashes are somewhat random so it is hard to tell. Seemed like leaving the Atlantis GL screensaver in KDE will crash about every other time with any combination.

While it is a tough call, I'm leaning towards leaving things as they are now. If the older driver helps anyone, it will be in /pasture, but otherwise I think we should just go with what we've got.

w1k0, I didn't experience this problem with that website, everything displayed correctly. I do sometimes have a problem with the screen when right-clicking in Firefox: the menu corrupts a large part of the screen. This started happening when Firefox 4 was introduced to current.

Thank you for the test. I still use Slackware 13.1. I’ll leave it when version 13.37 will appear and then I’ll face the problems concerning Firefox 4.0. You warned me so it’ll be my conscious decision. Thank you once again.

Basically, you need to explain to KWin, as it has direct rendering, using the KWIN_DIRECT_GL environment parameter.

So, view the changes from /usr/bin/starkde and the other fine tunning, explained in the first part of this post:

Your "KWIN_DIRECT_GL=1" enabled blur effect on KDE 4.5.5 (while you tested on 4.6.2). Thank you very much for this useful information!

Who said that these tweaks will make your system stable?

Me, I just said: the system will be more stable.

Anyways, If you want your system to be acceptable stable, use the latest versions of libdrm, Mesa and video driver.

Also, in few words, for a Intel 'video-card' user, the KDE 3D effects are a favor, not a right. Remember that.

BTW, you missed to tell us which 'video-card' you have, also, what KWin says in ~/.xsession-errors before and after these tweaks, right?

915GM, 945GM, and G31.

My 945GM computer has an old -current and crashes quite often. I'll upgrade X and try again later. The other two with up-to-date -current are somewhat more stable.

It was a test, not a question of stability. A comparison, should you wish it.

The video card is the one from Intel i5-460M, I never remember the name. As for ~/.xsession-errors, I'll test it again, later.
